Primary - Sen Teaching Assistant

We are seeking a caring, patient, and dedicated EYFS Teaching Assistant to provide 1:1 support for a child with Autism within our Early Years Foundation Stage setting. The successful candidate will work closely with the class teacher and SENDCo to help the child access learning, develop social skills, and engage positively in daily school life. The role is 8.45-1pm Monday to Friday on a long term basis.

The role requires someone who can build strong relationships, understand the individual needs of children with Autism, and create a supportive and nurturing learning environment.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide dedicated 1:1 support for a pupil with Autism throughout the school day.


• Support the child in accessing EYFS learning activities and classroom routines.


• Implement strategies recommended by the SENDCo and external professionals.


• Encourage communication, social interaction, and independence.


• Manage and support emotional regulation and transitions throughout the day.


• Adapt activities and resources to meet the pupil's individual needs.


• Monitor progress and maintain accurate records where required.


• Promote positive behaviour using consistent and supportive approaches.


• Work collaboratively with teachers, support staff, parents/carers, and external agencies.


• Support the child's welfare, safety, and emotional well-being at all times.

Person Specification

Essential Criteria

• Experience working with children in an Early Years or Primary setting.


• Understanding of Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC).


• Ability to build positive relationships with children and staff.


• Calm, patient, and nurturing approach.


• Good communication and teamwork skills.


• Ability to follow guidance and implement support strategies effectively.


• Commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children.

Desirable Criteria

• Previous experience supporting children with Autism on a 1:1 basis.


• Relevant Teaching Assistant qualification (Level 2 or Level 3).


• Experience using visual timetables, PECS, Makaton, or other communication support strategies.


• Knowledge of sensory needs and emotional regulation techniques.
