Job Summary:

The Practice Manager is responsible for the smooth day\-to\-day operation of the GP practice, including leadership, strategic planning, business management, HR, finance, IT, and compliance with NHS and CQC standards. The manager plays a key role in supporting the GP Partners in developing services to meet the needs of patients and the wider community.

Key Responsibilities: Leadership and Strategic Management

  • Work alongside GP Partners to develop and implement business strategy.

  • Lead and motivate non\-clinical staff and ensure effective teamwork.

  • Ensure high standards of care, customer service, and patient experience.
Operational Management
  • Oversee the daily running of the practice, including appointments, reception, and administrative systems.

  • Manage staff rotas, absence, recruitment, appraisals, and training.

  • Ensure efficient processes for repeat prescriptions, referrals, and clinical correspondence.
Human Resources
  • Maintain up\-to\-date HR records and policies.

  • Handle staff recruitment, induction, training, performance management, and conflict resolution.

  • Promote staff wellbeing and positive workplace culture.
Financial Management
  • Manage practice finances including budgets, payroll, pensions, invoices, and accounts.

  • Maximise income through enhanced services, QOF, and other funding streams.

  • Work with accountants, the ICB, and NHS England as required.
Compliance \& Governance
  • Ensure compliance with Care Quality Commission (CQC), GDPR, Health and Safety, NHS England policies, and clinical governance frameworks.

  • Maintain up\-to\-date policies and lead on audits and inspections.

  • Act as the Caldicott Guardian or work closely with the Data Protection Officer.
IT \& Information Management
  • Oversee clinical systems (e.g., EMIS), telephony, and digital services.

  • Ensure data quality and manage reporting for QOF, Enhanced Services, and other contractual obligations.
Patient Services
  • Ensure high standards of patient service, including complaints handling and patient engagement.

  • Promote and support the work of the Patient Participation Group (PPG).
External Liaison \& Representation
  • Represent the practice in meetings with the ICB, PCN, CQC, NHS England, and other stakeholders.

  • Develop strong relationships within the Primary Care Network (PCN).
Person Specification: Essential:
  • Experience in GP practice leadership/management role

  • Strong leadership and organisational skills

  • Financial and HR management experience

  • Knowledge of NHS systems, contracts, and compliance

  • Excellent interpersonal, problem\-solving, and IT skills
Desirable:
  • Previous GP practice management experience

  • Knowledge of EMIS

  • Qualification in healthcare/business management or HR

  • Understanding of QOF, DES, LES, and Enhanced Services
