About Protea
Protea is a deep\-tech company in Munich building aerial robotics for wildfire suppression. Flying firefighters, if you like: the reach of aerial, the precision of a ground crew. We're 20\+ people, founded by experienced hardware founders. We build prototypes, test them in real conditions with the people on the fire line, and industrialize the product they actually need.
We live a leader\-leader culture: it gives you the widest possible room to make decisions, and with that, the opportunity to shape Protea with us.
Your role at Protea
You own the power electronics inverter design for our fire\-suppression drones. That means the full chain from DC\-link to motor phase, all of it built to survive heat, smoke, vibration and the kind of duty cycles your last design never saw. You are the person in the room who knows how the electrons get to the propeller. You design it, build it, test it, break it, fix it, and hand over something the team can fly. Full\-stack hardware, no silos, no waiting for someone else to do the bench work.
What you'll do
- Own the core of our SiC motor drive, the power stage and MOSFETs, gate drivers, control stage and DC\-link for ESCs on a \<400 Vdc bus, from topology and component selection through layout and bring\-up
- Own the functions around it: auxiliary power supplies and regulators, current sensing, position and back\-EMF sensing, the CAN signal interface, protection mechanisms, EMI/EMC, thermal design and management
- Implement and tune sensorless FOC motor control on our motor/propeller stack together with the avionics and propulsion team
- Build and run the bench: test setups, dyno runs, thermal characterization, failure analysis – and take what you learn into the next revision
- Bring your hardware from prototype to something manufacturable: BOM, DFM, supplier communication for your parts
- Support flight test campaigns with your hardware in the field, and take the results back to the lab
- Degree in electrical engineering or equivalent practical background
- Superb and outstanding first\-principle thinking with proven demonstration of such thinking during hands\-on experience designing and bringing up power electronics: inverters, motor drives, DC/DC (\<400V)
- Solid understanding of SiC/GaN switching, gate drive design, EMI and thermal design
- Experience with motor control (FOC, sensorless a plus) and the firmware side of it. Enough to tune it, not necessarily to own the codebase
- You've stood at a bench, blown something up, and figured out why
- Deep drive to flourish in a leader\-leader culture with incredible grit to build a company with us
- Good English; German not required
