THE OPPORTUNITY
We are seeking an experienced Electrical / Power Electronics Design Engineer to join our team and support the design, development, analysis, testing and validation of high-power semiconductor assemblies and power conversion systems.

The role covers the complete electrical design process, from system-level analysis and semiconductor selection through to detailed assembly design, simulation, testing, technical documentation and customer support.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Analyse three-phase power systems, including six-pulse, twelve-pulse and multi-pulse rectifier topologies.

  • Perform transformer analysis, including star-star, star-delta, delta-star and delta-delta configurations.

  • Assess harmonics, power factor, commutation overlap, voltage regulation and fault currents.

  • Analyse transformer and semiconductor interaction, including leakage reactance, switching losses, reverse recovery and semiconductor stress.

  • Design high-voltage series-connected and high-current parallel-connected diode and thyristor assemblies.

  • Develop voltage and current sharing networks, including tolerance and worst-case assessments.

  • Design RC snubbers, surge suppression and crowbar protection systems.

  • Design low-inductance busbars and current paths, considering current density, short-circuit forces, stray inductance and thermal performance.

  • Carry out steady-state and transient thermal analysis for convection, forced-air and water-cooled systems.

  • Establish design margins, derating strategies and lifetime assessments.

  • Support testing, validation, technical investigations and customer requirements through to final technical documentation.

ABOUT YOU
You will be an experienced Electrical or Power Electronics Engineer with a strong understanding of high-power electrical systems and semiconductor applications.
You will have:
  • A degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Engineering or a related discipline.

  • At least 5 years' relevant experience in a power electronics or high-power electrical engineering environment.

  • Strong knowledge of transformers, power semiconductors and three-phase power systems.

  • Experience using simulation tools such as SPICE and PLECS.

  • The ability to perform first-principles engineering calculations and technical investigations.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to work independently and take ownership of complex engineering requirements.

  • Good communication skills and the ability to work with customers and cross-functional teams.

Experience in one or more of the following would be advantageous:
  • Industrial rectifiers

  • HVDC systems

  • Marine propulsion converters

  • Pulse power systems

  • Fusion energy equipment

  • Rail traction or FACTS systems

The successful candidate will be capable of taking a customer requirement from AC system and transformer analysis through semiconductor selection, stack and protection design, thermal verification, busbar design, testing and final technical documentation.
