The Department of Laboratory Medicine consists of seven divisions and comprises advanced basic scientific, translational, and clinical research. In addition, it is one of the main educational departments at Karolinska Institutet. A postdoctoral position is available in the Division of Clinical Physiology. Our research aims to raise awareness of the relationship between physical activity and health and is conducted in close collaboration with the Unit of Clinical Physiology at the Karolinska University Hospital.

Your mission

We and others have shown that physical activity after a cancer diagnosis leads to maintained physical functioning and quality of life. In addition, current epidemiological, clinical and animal\-model based evidence support the role of exercise to enhance therapeutic efficacy, reduce recurrence and improve survival. However, very little is known about how exercise exerts its beneficial effects. In a recent publication, we showed that the immune system, and especially CD8\+ T\-cells, are instrumental for the anti\-neoplastic effects of exercise and that exercise induced shifts in metabolite availability can alter immune cell function.

A postdoctoral position is available at the Department of Laboratory Medicine, in the lab of Ass Prof Helene Rundqvist for a highly motivated individual. For the project, we will combine animal models with human intervention trials to investigate the effects of high intensity exercise on CD8\+ T\-cell mobilization and function. The successful applicant will characterize CD8\+ T\-cell function after exercise both *in vivo* and *ex\-vivo*, with specific regard to effector function, metabolism, t\-cell receptor signaling and homing capacity. To accomplish this, the applicant will have access to state of the art human exercise facilities, animal models, and pre\-clinical labs in an innovative and translational environment.

Your profile

To be eligible for employment as a postdoctoral researcher, a PhD or a foreign degree deemed to be equivalent to a Swedish PhD is required. This eligibility requirement must be fulfilled at the latest at the time of the employment decision. Completion of your doctoral degree within the last three years is considered an advantage. If there are special reasons, your degree may have been completed earlier.

We are looking for a candidate with extensive and documented experience in human exercise trials, multi\-color flow cytometry and functional characterization of immune cells. Previous experience of *in vivo* and *in vitro* imaging techniques, metabolic profiling, and epigenetic characterization is considered a merit. A keen interest in science and the ability to interact effectively and work productively in a team as well as a good ability to communicate in English is required. Emphasis will be placed on personal skills, knowledge, and abilities, as well as on documented previous work.
