Synnovis is inviting applications to join our expanding team of highly skilled Phlebotomists. We are recruiting for both part\-time (10 hours weekend) Saturday and Sunday based at the Princess Royal University Hospital and (20 hours per week) based at Kings College Hospital\- Denmark Hill.

We would like to hear from people who are keen, enthusiastic, flexible and committed to improving our patient’s experience. To be considered for these roles, candidates should possess excellent customer service skills and be able to demonstrate this during the selection process. Some experience working within the role of a phlebotomist would be highly beneficial. You must have excellent spoken and written English, be numerate and have first\-class dexterity skills.

You will be required to work alongside medical and nursing staff and other healthcare professionals as part of a multidisciplinary team. This role will require you to work in a multitude of locations ranging from wards, outpatients, clinics and community services (including a variety of geographic locations).

You will be required to undertake a range of protocol\-driven tasks, working to tight targets and deadlines. These tasks will include being required to handle clinical specimens, accurately record data for quality assurance monitoring procedures, as well as other administrative duties.

Concentration and attention to detail are essential to this role. The post holder will offer a helpful and professional service to all visitors and telephone callers and will assist in the provision of a high\-quality service

Please note: If and when required, you will be required to work a flexible shift pattern between 06:30 and 18:00 Monday through to Sunday.

To collect blood samples from inpatients, outpatients and patients referred to the hospital for blood tests by their General Practitioner or Consultant, within all our sites located within Southwark and Lambeth.

Technical

a. To comply with local and national policies for the safe, secure and confidential processing, and storage of patient and other patient information.

b. To use the computer information systems (e.g. Swiftqueue, EPIC, Positive Patient Identification Systems) as per authorised protocols.

c. To maintain the integrity and accuracy of computer databases.

d. To escalate any IT downtime to the senior managers.

e. To report anything suspicious to managers.

Clinical

a. To work on the wards collecting bloods from inpatients and in an outpatient, setting taking bloods from hospital and GP patients.

b. To adhere to the protocols for the accurate and positive confirmation of the identity of patients pre and post drawing blood samples and consenting. Ensuring all patient identifiers are on the blood tubes and barcodes on labels are of good quality.

c. To obtain venous and capillary blood samples from adult patients with appropriate requests in addition to accessing PICC and Hickman Lines for blood sampling when required (Cancer Centre only).

d. To adhere to the protocols for the accurate and positive labelling of blood samples immediately following the collection of the specimens from the patient. Frequent requirement for prolonged concentration. Attention to detail is essential to reduce transcription errors relating to personal data.

e. To be responsible for blood samples reaching the laboratories in a timely manner, be it ensuring porters or couriers have picked up samples, using the chute or delivering in person to the Specimen Reception areas.

f. To maintain adequate stocks of sample containers and needles on trolleys and workstations and to assist in unpacking consumable deliveries.

g. To actively pursue good professional working relationships with all staff groups on the wards/outpatient clinics.

h. To always be polite, sensitive and professional when dealing with patients, their families and all other hospital staff and colleagues.

i. To communicate effectively with patients, in circumstances where they may be angry or anxious, always ensuring that patients understand the messages that you are giving them.

Administrative

a. To assist with record keeping, to ensure compliance with good work practices required for the standards of ISO. Participate in conducting audits and assisting with patient complaints handling.

b. To advise the Phlebotomy Senior Management Team when stocks of consumables are approaching minimum stock levels.

c. To report to the Phlebotomy Senior Management Team any instance or event which may cause a service delivery failure.

Other

a. To observe and adhere to local and national health and safety policies.

b. To keep the workplace and workbenches clean and tidy.

c. To maintain good work relations with all members of staff, and to promote effective teamwork.

d. To treat everyone associated with our Host Trusts with courtesy and respect.

e. To ensure compliance with all local and national standards of work practice e.g. UKAS, CQC

f. To maintain and promote the professional image of Synnovis, Synlab, all of our Host Trusts and local ICB’s.

g. To participate in an annual Performance, Planning and Review process in order to agree/achieve objectives to support personal development and the department.

h. To actively undertake supervision, giving accurate feedback on performance using the appropriate paperwork on the day of supervision, of junior staff and students (including external students and medical students).

i. To take responsibility for the care of patients whilst under the supervision of Phlebotomy.
