We are seeking a motivated and enthusiastic Learning Support Mentor in PE \& Sport to support and engage young people within our alternative education provision.
The successful candidate will plan and deliver engaging PE, Sport, Health and Fitness lessons across KS3, KS4 and KS5, including the delivery of NCFE Level 1 Exercise Studies. They will create a safe, inclusive and positive learning environment that supports vulnerable learners to develop their skills, confidence, resilience and independence.
The role involves monitoring learner progress, fostering positive relationships, promoting participation in physical activity, and helping students re\-engage with education while supporting pathways into further education, training and employment. The post holder will also undertake the day\-to\-day responsibilities associated with the Learning Support Mentor role, ensuring high standards of learner support and educational delivery.
Responsibilities
- Plan, deliver and assess engaging PE, Sport, Health and Fitness sessions tailored to learners' individual needs, abilities and interests.
- Deliver practical and theory\-based learning, including NCFE Level 1 Exercise Studies, embedding life skills, employability skills and functional English and Maths where appropriate.
- Adapt learning activities to support learners with SEND, SEMH needs and those requiring additional support.
- Create and maintain a safe, inclusive and structured learning environment, promoting high standards of health, safety and wellbeing during all physical activities.
- Build positive and professional relationships with learners to encourage attendance, engagement, confidence and personal development.
- Monitor learner progress and maintain accurate records, including assessments, targets, feedback and intervention plans in line with organisational policies.
- Collaborate with support staff, therapists, parents/carers and external agencies to provide a holistic approach to learner development.
- Organise and support enrichment activities, sporting events, competitions and physical activity initiatives that enhance learner engagement and achievement.
- Participate in staff meetings, CPD opportunities and quality assurance activities, contributing to the continuous improvement of the provision.
- Input JEP Way scores for young people based on behaviour, attitude and effort to learning throughout lessons, contributing to reward and recognition processes.
- Complete termly reports for each learner, reflecting on progress, achievement, attitude to learning, effort, participation and behaviour.
- Work confidently with learners of varying abilities, demonstrating enthusiasm and promoting positive attitudes towards PE, Sport, Health and Fitness.
- PE and Sport Knowledge – Strong practical and theoretical knowledge of PE, Sport, Health and Fitness, with the ability to confidently demonstrate and teach a range of activities and techniques.
- De\-escalation and Behaviour Management – Skilled in managing challenging behaviour calmly and positively using restorative and trauma\-informed approaches.
- Relationship Building – Ability to establish positive, trusting relationships with learners who may be disengaged, anxious or lacking confidence.
- Organisation and Planning – Strong organisational skills to effectively plan lessons, prepare resources, assess learners and track progress.
- Health and Safety Awareness – Understanding of safe practice within PE and sporting environments, including risk assessments, equipment safety and learner wellbeing.
- Assessment and Record Keeping – Competent in maintaining accurate records of attendance, progress, behaviour and achievement in line with awarding body and organisational requirements.
- Motivation and Engagement – Ability to inspire participation, resilience and confidence through physical activity and sport, encouraging learners to achieve their full potential.
- Full UK driving license.
- Experience in delivering Sport lessons/ activities to YPs
- First Aid, Health and Safety knowledge
- Teaching or training experience, preferably with young people or vulnerable groups.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to manage behaviour calmly and positivity.
- A commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people.
- Experience working in alternative education or youth work settings
- Awareness of SEND, Safeguarding strategies
- Experience of curriculum development or accreditation (e.g. AQA, NCFE)
