PCB Design Engineer
Fancy learning proper board design from people who've actually done it, rather than picking it up by trial and error? This one's for someone who wants to move beyond routine layout work and build a real career out of it.
I'm recruiting on behalf of an engineering business based just south of Cambridge, easy reach of the city by road or rail. They work across a genuinely broad range of PCB design, RF, digital, analogue, mixed-signal and power, and take mentoring seriously rather than just saying they do. You'd be reporting into a senior CAD lead and working closely with a senior PCB design engineer and the wider engineering team.
The role
They're after a proactive PCB Design Engineer, from junior to mid-level. Someone with a genuine enthusiasm for layout and a desire to build a career in high-quality board design rather than just clock in and out on routine work.
You'll contribute across the full design cycle: component library creation and maintenance, layout, documentation and release, working with design engineers to turn schematics into well-structured boards and building confidence on increasingly complex work as you go.
There's real supervised exposure here too, developing practical understanding of RF, digital, analogue and power PCB design, working with mechanical engineers on board integration and packaging constraints, and supporting design reviews by preparing material and capturing actions. As you grow into the role, there's scope to get involved in delivery tracking, efficiency improvements, supplier conversations and keeping an eye on where PCB technology's heading.
What you'll bring
- Experience in PCB design, electronics design support, or a closely related role
- Genuine enthusiasm for electronics and PCB layout, and for turning design intent into clean, manufacturable boards
- Strong attention to detail, with the discipline to check your own work thoroughly
- Some experience with PCB design tools; Altium experience would be an advantage
- An understanding of component placement, routing, design rules and manufacturing outputs
- The ability to take feedback well and improve quickly under guidance
- Self-motivation, organisation and a practical approach to problem solving
- Comfort communicating across a multidisciplinary engineering team
HNC/HND, degree, apprenticeship or equivalent practical background in electronics, PCB design or a related discipline. Above all, curiosity and enthusiasm count for a lot here.
