LOCATION: Salford \- Hybrid

PROPOSED SALARY RANGE: up to £67,400 per annum depending on relevant skills, knowledge and experience. The expected salary range for this role reflects internal benchmarking and external market insights.

PURPOSE OF THE ROLE

The Operations Manager (Deputy Head of Sound) will support the Head of Sound and Communications in managing the increasing complexity and scale of audio operations, providing leadership across all Sport Production areas (Video, Audio, Events, Stories and Online). You’ll act as deputy when required, ensuring continuity and high standards across all activity. Working closely with internal teams and external partners—including Outside Broadcast suppliers, BBC Technology, Timeline, Dock10 and other third\-party providers—you’ll help shape how audio is delivered across TV, radio, streaming and digital platforms.

YOUR KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND IMPACT:

  • Support the leadership and day\-to\-day management of the BBC Sport sound team, working closely with managed service partners and outside broadcast suppliers

  • Act as deputy to the Head of Sound and Communications, providing cover and ensuring continuity of leadership when required

  • Plan and deliver audio projects, from major event delivery (e.g. Olympic Games, World Cup, Wimbledon) to workflow design and operational support

  • Work as an operational Sound Supervisor where required, maintaining the highest artistic and technical standards across multiplatform productions

  • Provide expert advice and guidance to production and technical teams on sound and communications throughout the production lifecycle

  • Build strong working relationships with indie companies, external broadcasters and suppliers, aligning technical requirements and supporting effective broadcast planning

  • Drive innovation and continuous improvement, including supporting AoIP transition, trialling new technologies and enhancing workflows across evolving platforms
YOUR SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

ESSENTIAL CRITERIA:

  • Excellent knowledge of live sport audio workflows and operations

  • Excellent system knowledge of broadcast sound desks and communication systems including some hands\-on experience.

  • Able to configure and support large\-scale communication systems within complex broadcast environments.

  • Excellent communication skills and a great team player

  • Proven experience in live broadcast audio, with the ability to operate at Sound Supervisor level when required
