Spire Harpenden Hospital offers a modern, well\-equipped clinical environment designed to support high\-quality patient care. The hospital features 64 private en\-suite patient rooms , providing a comfortable and private setting for recovery, alongside five operating theatres , including specialist laminar flow theatres for orthopaedic procedures.
The Role
As a key member of the Senior Management Team , the Operations Director will play a crucial role in delivering the Hospital’s Annual Operating Plan in line with Spire Healthcare’s strategy, purpose, and values.
You will lead all non\-clinical services, ensuring efficiency, performance, and excellent patient experience across the hospital.
Key Responsibilities
Capacity \& Utilisation
- Maximise patient throughput and utilisation of hospital facilities
- Monitor and optimise use of theatres, outpatient clinics, and diagnostics
- Review hospital space to increase clinical capacity
- Align staffing levels with activity across non\-clinical teams
- Support and implement local capital expenditure projects
- Lead all non\-clinical functions through Heads of Department, including:
+ Catering
+ Engineering
+ Housekeeping
+ Reception
+ Procurement \& Supplies
+ Switchboard
- Drive efficient, standardised ways of working aligned to “One Best Way”
- Build highly engaged, motivated, and flexible teams
- Strengthen collaboration between clinical and non\-clinical teams
- Act as key liaison with the Patient Support Centre
- Champion continuous improvement and customer service excellence
- Oversee day\-to\-day operational performance of the hospital
- Deliver financial targets and key performance indicators
- Work closely with the Finance Director on budgets, forecasting, and variance analysis
- Develop and implement action plans to improve profitability and efficiency
- Ensure compliance with NHS contracts and service agreements
- Identify and implement commercial development opportunities
- Coordinate risk management activities across clinical and non\-clinical areas
- Ensure compliance with CQC, HSE, and other regulatory standards
- Oversee incident reporting, investigation, and learning
- Lead implementation of policies and procedures and ensure regular review
- Participation in the Senior Management Team on\-call rota will be required
