Write code that flies in space for new ambitious missions

We are seeking a skilled Onboard Software Engineer to develop flight software for nanosatellite subsystems. In this role, you will implement real\-time embedded code in C/C\+\+ for resource\-constrained flight hardware, contribute to algorithms for attitude control, orbit propagation, and fault detection, and validate your work through hardware\-in\-the\-loop testing and simulators.

You will join our Advanced Missions global team, working on next\-generation flight software concepts while collaborating closely with GomSpace's established Software and AOCS teams in Aalborg — whose code flies on missions like Juventas (ESA/Hera), GOMX\-5, and customer platforms worldwide.

Your Role

As Onboard Software Engineer, you will develop, integrate, and validate embedded flight software across GomSpace's satellite subsystems. Your code will run on flight hardware in orbit — this is not simulation work, it is real spacecraft engineering.

Your key responsibilities include:

  • Develop onboard software for nanosatellite subsystems (OBDH, AOCS, GNC, Power, TT\&C).

  • Implement real\-time embedded code in C/C\+\+ for resource\-constrained flight hardware.

  • Perform integration and testing using HIL setups, simulators, and flatsats.

  • Contribute to algorithms for ADCS, orbit propagation, FDIR, and telemetry handling.

  • Collaborate with systems and hardware teams to define software interfaces and verification plans.
What Success Looks Like

In the initial phase, success means:

  • Understanding GomSpace's software architecture (CSP, rparam, Flight Planner, SDK) and building firmware for an A3200 or NanoMind HP target within your first month.

  • Contributing to an active project's flight software within the first sprint cycle.

  • Establishing effective working relationships with the Aalborg SW and AOCS teams.
Over time, you will be recognised for owning subsystem software modules end\-to\-end — from development through flight qualification — and for contributing to reusable libraries, the GomSpace SDK, and the next\-generation LP platform built on Zephyr RTOS.

What You Bring

You are an embedded software engineer with a passion for writing reliable, real\-time code that operates in the most demanding environment there is — space.

You likely bring:

  • A BSc or MSc in Computer Science, Embedded Systems, Electrical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related field.

  • 2–5 years of experience developing embedded software in C/C\+\+ for resource\-constrained platforms.

  • Experience with RTOS (FreeRTOS) or embedded Linux environments.

  • Proficiency on embedded targets (ARM Cortex\-M, AVR32, Zynq 7000\) and familiarity with protocols such as CAN, I2C, SPI, UART, and CSP.

  • Experience with HIL/SIL testing, CI pipelines (Jenkins), and Git/GitHub workflows.

  • Exposure to space/aerospace software development and ECSS standards is a strong plus.
Who You Are

You are methodical, detail\-oriented, and energised by the challenge of writing software where failure is not an option. You take pride in clean, well\-tested code and thrive in a collaborative, cross\-disciplinary environment.

You are known for:

  • Rigour and precision — flight software demands it, and you deliver it.

  • Collaborative mindset — comfortable working across HW, systems, and AOCS disciplines.

  • Curiosity and drive — a genuine passion for space technology and embedded systems.

  • Adaptability — thriving in a small, agile team where your contribution is visible and impactful.

  • Execution discipline – ensuring commitments are met in demanding environments.

  • Customer focus – ensuring focus on customer’s success.

  • True leadership — taking ownership of your domain and driving technical excellence.
