Night Shift Production Manager
About Rem3dy Health
Rem3dy Health is an award\-winning health technology and advanced manufacturing company based in Birmingham. We combine proprietary 3D\-printing technology, nutrition and innovative manufacturing to create personalised health products for customers around the world.
As our manufacturing operations continue to grow, we are looking for an experienced, hands\-on and highly accountable Night Shift Production Manager to lead our overnight manufacturing operation and ensure each shift delivers safely, efficiently and to the required quality standards.
The Role
We are looking for an experienced food/FMCG manufacturing manager and confident people leader who can take full operational ownership of our night shift.
This is a visible, hands\-on management role. You will spend significant time on the manufacturing floor, setting priorities, leading the team, reviewing performance and resolving issues as they happen.
Working Monday\-Friday from 22:00 to 06:30, you will be the senior operational point of contact on site overnight and will be responsible for ensuring the production plan is delivered safely, compliantly, efficiently and to specification.
You will work closely with Operations, Quality, Supply Chain, Engineering and the day\-shift management team. Where issues arise overnight, you will be expected to assess the situation, make sound decisions within your authority, escalate appropriately and ensure there is a clear, accurate handover for the following shift.
Key Responsibilities
You will take day\-to\-day ownership of the night shift across production and associated manufacturing activities.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Taking full operational ownership of the night shift and ensuring the agreed production plan is delivered safely, on time and to the required quality standard.
- Leading, motivating and managing the night\-shift production team, including permanent and agency employees.
- Allocating people effectively across manufacturing, packing and supporting activities in line with production priorities, skills and operational demand.
- Reviewing the shift plan at the start of each night and confirming labour, materials, equipment, documentation and line readiness.
- Monitoring output against plan throughout the shift and taking prompt action where performance begins to fall behind.
- Tracking and reporting key shift KPIs including output, production attainment, labour efficiency, waste, yield, downtime, quality performance and safety.
- Maintaining strong floor presence and ensuring team leaders and operatives understand priorities, targets and expected standards.
- Ensuring all production activities are carried out in accordance with GMP, HACCP, FSSC 22000, food\-safety, hygiene, allergen, traceability and site quality requirements.
- Ensuring line clearance, batch documentation, checks and production records are completed accurately and in real time.
- Taking immediate action where there is a quality, food\-safety or compliance concern, including stopping or holding production where required and escalating to Quality or senior management.
- Ensuring Health \& Safety procedures, safe systems of work and site rules are followed consistently throughout the shift.
- Responding to accidents, incidents and near misses, ensuring the area is made safe, appropriate escalation takes place and accurate records are completed.
- Responding quickly to equipment issues and breakdowns, coordinating first\-line troubleshooting and escalating to Engineering, Maintenance or external support where required.
- Recording downtime and equipment issues clearly so recurring faults can be investigated and corrective action can be taken.
- Working closely with Supply Chain and Planning to identify material shortages, stock issues or production constraints that could affect the plan.
- Managing attendance, breaks, conduct and performance during the shift and escalating people issues through the appropriate management or HR process.
- Providing coaching, support and on\-the\-job development to team leaders and operatives and ensuring employees are trained and competent for the tasks they perform.
- Ensuring agency employees are effectively integrated, appropriately trained and managed to the same operational, safety and quality standards as permanent employees.
- Driving continuous improvement across the night shift, identifying opportunities to improve productivity, labour utilisation, waste, changeovers, equipment reliability and ways of working.
- Maintaining high standards of housekeeping, hygiene and organisation and ensuring production areas are left in the correct condition for the incoming shift.
- Communicating clearly with Quality, Engineering, Supply Chain and other support functions where overnight decisions, actions or escalation are required.
- Completing a fully comprehensive end\-of\-shift handover covering output versus plan, downtime, quality issues, people matters, maintenance concerns, material shortages, outstanding actions and priorities for the next shift.
- Acting as the senior operational escalation point overnight and making calm, proportionate decisions when unexpected issues arise.
We're looking for an experienced production leader who is comfortable taking real ownership of a manufacturing shift and making decisions without needing constant day\-shift support.
You may currently be working as a Production Manager, Manufacturing Manager, Shift Manager, Operations Manager, Senior Production Supervisor or similar within food, FMCG, nutraceutical, pharmaceutical, packaging or another regulated manufacturing environment.
You should be practical, visible and confident on the factory floor, with the ability to balance people, output, quality, safety and operational priorities in a fast\-paced and time\-critical environment.
You should have:
- Strong production or manufacturing management experience within food, FMCG, packaging or another regulated manufacturing environment.
- Proven experience leading medium\-to\-large operational teams, ideally including both permanent and agency labour.
- Strong people\-management skills, with the confidence to set expectations, manage performance, coach employees and deal with difficult situations appropriately.
- A good understanding of production planning, labour allocation, capacity, line performance and shift delivery.
- Experience managing production KPIs and using data to identify issues, make decisions and improve performance.
- A strong working understanding of food safety, GMP, hygiene, traceability and quality\-control requirements.
- The confidence to stop or hold production where safety, quality or compliance could be compromised.
- Strong problem\-solving and root\-cause thinking, with the ability to remain calm and structured when issues arise.
- A practical understanding of manufacturing and packaging equipment and confidence supporting first\-line troubleshooting before escalating specialist faults.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills and the ability to produce clear, factual shift reports and handovers.
- Good IT skills and confidence using production systems, dashboards, spreadsheets and digital reporting tools.
- A strong approach to Health \& Safety and a willingness to challenge unsafe behaviour.
- The ability to work independently and make sound decisions as the senior operational manager on site overnight.
- A reliable, resilient and flexible approach with the ability to work permanently on nights.
We don't expect one person to have everything, but experience or qualifications in several of the following would be particularly valuable:
- Level 3 Food Safety / Food Hygiene qualification.
- HACCP Level 3 or equivalent.
- IOSH Managing Safely or equivalent Health \& Safety training.
- First Aid and/or Fire Marshal training.
- Experience working within an FSSC 22000, BRCGS or similarly accredited manufacturing environment.
- Lean manufacturing, continuous improvement, 5S or structured problem\-solving experience.
- Experience of high\-volume food, confectionery, nutraceutical, pharmaceutical or gummy manufacturing.
- Experience with flow\-wrapping, pouch packing, automated packing equipment or similar packaging machinery.
- Experience in a multi\-shift or extended\-hours manufacturing operation.
- Formal leadership or management training.
This role will suit someone who takes ownership and is naturally drawn to the factory floor rather than managing from behind a desk.
If output begins to slip, a machine goes down or a quality concern appears, we want someone whose first instinct is to understand what is happening, organise the right response and keep the shift moving safely and correctly.
You will need to be calm under pressure, commercially aware, data\-led and decisive, while never compromising food safety, product quality or employee safety in pursuit of output.
We are a fast\-moving, technology\-led manufacturing business, so this role will suit a manager who is comfortable with change, challenges traditional ways of working and looks for practical improvements rather than accepting recurring problems.
Most importantly, we want someone who can create a well\-organised, accountable and positive night shift where people know the plan, understand the standard and take pride in delivering it.
How Success Will Be Measured
- Production plan attainment and consistent delivery of required shift output.
- Safe operation with strong Health \& Safety compliance and appropriate incident management.
- Right\-first\-time quality, food\-safety compliance and accurate production documentation.
- Waste, yield, downtime and labour\-efficiency performance.
- Effective management of attendance, performance, training and team standards.
