*We’re not looking for a carer. We’re looking for the right person.*

If you’re someone who finds genuine satisfaction in making a real difference to a family’s life — and you’d like a settled, consistent role in a warm home where you’ll genuinely be valued — please read on.

ABOUT THE GENTLEMAN YOU'LL BE CARING FOR

Our much\-loved father is 91 years old — kind, polite, witty and very much himself. He has Alzheimer’s, which means he’s forgetful rather than lost. He’s unaware of how much support he now needs, which means he remains cheerful, unhurried, and a genuinely pleasant presence to be around. He has reduced mobility and should use his zimmer frame when reminded. He attends the Kinross Day Centre four days a week and thoroughly enjoys the company and stimulation it provides.

Dad loves numeric games and puzzles and will happily while away the early evening with a willing opponent, and will probably beat you at dominoes but may need a gentle reminder of the rules if you play a new game. His eyes will light up when you share a story or anecdote about his former passions — curling, sailing, travel and DIY — even if he no longer initiates those conversations himself. He will engage you in light banter and often amazes us with his witty responses. He does ask you to repeat instructions and often seeks clarification.

Dad is cared for during the day by his devoted 89\-year\-old wife – Mum \- who remains active and very much in charge. Their beautiful elderly golden retriever is also an important member of the family! Their growing team of great supporters include a night time carer who covers some nights each week, a carer who attends week day mornings to shower and dress Dad. Other carers keep him company on the evenings when Mum goes out to play bridge and on alternate Wednesdays when he’s not at the Day Centre. This role sits within this wider team — consistent, supportive, and valued by everyone in it.

ABOUT THE ROLE

This is a sleeping night position. Your evening will look something like this:

3:00pm or 9:30pm

Some days will be a 3pm start, others will be arriving in time for bed. Flexibility is key until we settle on a team rota.

3pm \- Arrive and settle in. Meet Dad off the Day Centre bus, cook dinner for mum and dad, look out for light household tasks – tidying the kitchen, managing the dishwasher, a load of laundry if needed; after dinner tidy up then play stimulating games or puzzles with Dad.

9:30pm \- Support Dad with his bedtime routine — getting comfortable, any final needs of the evening.

10pm\+

Settle down to sleep in the room provided. You’ll hear if Dad needs the loo — typically once or twice during the night. He doesn’t always need support but mum sleeps deeply so if dad needs help then you're on call.

During the night IF required

Assist Dad safely to and from the bathroom using his zimmer frame. If there’s been an accident, freshen him up and clean up calmly and with good humour — it’s all part of the role.

8:00am

Finish. (9:00am on occasions when Mum is away, until the morning carer arrives.)

*We’re honest that this role may develop over time. If Dad’s mobility decreases, there may be more active support needed during the night — and we’d want the right person to grow with the role rather than start again. For the right candidate, there is the potential for hours and responsibilities to increase.*

*Ideally you will enjoy cooking and importantly support Mum with chat as Dad's chat can be limited these days! She's amazing for 89 and is more active than many 60 year olds!*

AVAILABILITY

We are flexible on the arrangement and can discuss what works best:

  • 3 or 4 nights per week

  • Optional: weekend morning hours (Saturday and Sunday, 10:00–11:00am) to shower and dress Dad

  • We are open to discussing the right pattern with the right person
WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR

Essential:

  • A warm, patient manner — someone who sees the person, not just the condition

  • Experience in elderly or personal care (professional or family caring experience both count)

  • Calm and unflustered when someone is confused or needs cleaning up in the night

  • Physically able to provide steady support with mobility assistance

  • Reliable and punctual — a family is depending on you

  • Your own transport as home is on the outskirts of Milnathort

  • PVG Scheme membership, or willingness to apply before starting

  • Two references
Desirable:
  • Experience with dementia or Alzheimer’s care

  • Enjoy cooking nutritional meals not heating up

  • Local to Milnathort / Kinross area or willingness to travel

  • A dog lover — there is a gentle elderly golden retriever in residence
WHAT WE OFFER
  • £15\.63 per hour plus £110 per night (flat rate) from 10pm – 8am

  • Settled, consistent role — same home, same faces

  • Your own room and full use of the home overnight

  • Warm welcome from a close and grateful family

  • Morning handover to the daytime carer, who knows Dad well

  • Family contact available by phone at any time

  • Potential to grow with the role as needs develop

  • A role where you’ll genuinely matter to this family
A FINAL WORD

We are a close family looking for someone who wants to be part of our parents’ lives — not just fulfil a shift. The right person will be patient, kind, and comfortable in their own company through the night. They’ll understand that a little humour goes a long way with Dad, and that Mum’s independence and dignity matter just as much as Dad’s comfort.

We’d love to have an informal conversation before any formal process — just to make sure we’re the right fit for each other – so if it all sounds too good to be true and the perfect role for you then please apply.
