Job summary

GCHQ is an intelligence, cyber and security agency with a mission to keep the UK safe. We use cutting\-edge technology, ingenuity and partnerships to identify, analyse and disrupt threats. Working with our intelligence partners MI5 and MI6, we protect the UK from terrorism, cyber\-attacks and espionage.

At GCHQ you’ll do varied and fascinating work in a supportive and inclusive environment that puts the emphasis on teamwork.

The National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC), part of GCHQ, is the UK Government’s lead authority on cyber security. The organisation is at the heart of the Government’s cyber security strategy and has the aim of making the UK the safest place to live and work online.

This is an exciting opportunity to join the NCSC as Social Media Lead. In this role, you will work closely with the Head of Media and Social Media to refresh and strengthen the organisation’s social media strategy. We are looking for a high\-performing, motivated individual with a passion for delivering impactful and creative communications. You will help inform audiences about the NCSC’s mission, provide clear, actionable advice, and play a key role in shaping public conversation.

Job description

You’ll be responsible for the day\-to\-day management of our social media channels, creating engaging and visually appealing, original multimedia content across copy, graphics and video. This role offers the opportunity to bring fresh ideas to life and develop content that captures and connects with our audience.

You’ll collaborate with teams across the organisation, government and international counterparts to ensure effective social media output that has real impact. And you’ll keep up to date with industry best practice, providing consultancy and advice to the organisation on our social media use and content.

Using reporting tools, you’ll analyse and evaluate how our channels are performing, identify areas of improvement, and provide regular reporting on social media KPIs and achievements.

Person specification

You’ll be someone who values working as part of a collaborative, high\-performing team that prides itself on delivering exceptional results. Our culture is really important to us, and you’ll value a happy and supportive working environment which frequently engages with members of the senior leadership team.

You’ll have prior experience working in social media or content creation with effective decision\-making and collaboration skills, working with different stakeholders to make recommendations driven by insight and to deliver successful outcomes. Having worked in journalism, public relations or government communications would certainly be advantageous.

You’ll be organised, and able to manage a variety of different projects to tight deadlines. Your writing will be compelling: you’ll be able to translate complicated, technical detail into engaging copy. You’ll have superb attention to detail and be cool and calm under pressure.

You’ll have a strong interest in the news agenda of the day and the ability to spot stories, emerging issues and trends of interest to the organisation.

GCHQ Competencies

As part of the selection process, the NCSC will assess you using competencies aligned with those used across the UK Intelligence Community. These are closely based on the Civil Service Behaviours, so if you’re familiar with those, you’re already on the right track.

At Level 3, we’ll be looking at how you demonstrate the following:

  • Seeing the Big Picture (Civil Service Behaviour Equivalent: Seeing the Big Picture)

  • Communicating and Influencing (Civil Service Behaviour Equivalent: Communicating and Influencing)

  • Working Collaboratively (Civil Service Behaviour Equivalent: Working Together)
