Mobility & Lift Service Engineer (Trainee / Product Training Provided)
About Us
At TPG DisableAids, we don’t just install and maintain equipment — we help people stay independent, safe, and confident in their own homes. As a well\-established family business serving Herefordshire since 1985, we’ve grown into a market\-leading supplier of assistive technology across the region. Our dedication to quality and care has even been recognised nationally, including being named BHTA Retailer of the Year.
We’re a friendly, supportive team, and we’re now looking for a Trainee Engineer who loves solving problems and wants to build a rewarding, long\-term career.
The Role
This is a highly practical, varied role where no two days are the same. You’ll be working out in the community — visiting service users in their homes, schools, care homes, and hospitals, as well as spending some time in our Hereford warehouse.
Working alongside our experienced engineers, you’ll learn how to install, service, and repair a wide range of mobility equipment, including stairlifts, overhead hoists, manual wheelchairs, and powerchairs.
A Note on Pay \& Progression: Because this is a trainee position, the starting salary reflects a trainee wage. However, we provide a clear, structured pathway, and your pay will grow through regular reviews as your skills and responsibilities increase.
What We’re Looking For
We don’t expect you to know our specific products inside out — we will provide full, structured product training.
What we *do* need is someone who already has a solid technical foundation. You don't just want to swap out parts; you’re the kind of person who naturally wants to get to the root cause of a problem to understand why it happened and how to fix it properly.
To fit the bill, you’ll need:
- Location: You must be based within Herefordshire.
- Experience: At least one year of practical experience working in an electrical or mechanical environment.
- Diagnostic Skills: A natural ability for mechanical or electrical fault\-finding and problem\-solving.
- Hands\-on Confidence: Comfort using hand and power tools safely and efficiently.
- People Skills: An empathetic, patient approach with a genuine pride in delivering great customer service to vulnerable people.
- The Essentials: A full UK driving licence and a willingness to undergo an enhanced DBS check (since you'll be working closely with the public).
- Electrical and mechanical fault diagnosis, focusing on finding the root cause.
- Installation, servicing, and repair of stairlifts, hoists, wheelchairs, and powerchairs.
- LOLER safety testing and inspection procedures.
- Accurately recording your daily work.
- Professional, empathetic communication with our customers.
- Hours: 40 hours per week, Monday to Friday (8:30am – 5:00pm).
- Training: Full mentoring and structured product training.
- Pension: Up to 5% employer\-matched pension contribution.
- Overtime: Paid at a premium rate once you are trained.
- On\-Call \& Vehicle Perk: Once you are fully trained, you will join our essential out\-of\-hours on\-call rota. This runs on a 1\-in\-12 rotation and includes weekends, ensuring our vulnerable customers are kept mobile when they need us most. It's a vital part of what we do and comes with extra premium pay to reward your commitment. Plus, once you're on the rota, you'll get the added benefit of a company vehicle for commuting to and from work.
