Mechanical Design Engineer
Job Purpose
We are seeking an experienced and motivated Design Engineer to join our engineering team. The successful candidate will be responsible for the design and development of bespoke machinery and equipment, working closely with customers, project managers, manufacturing teams, and installation personnel to deliver innovative engineering solutions from concept through to completion.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and develop purpose\-built machinery and equipment to meet customer specifications.
- Create detailed 3D models, manufacturing drawings, and assembly drawings.
- Design conveyor systems, robotic integrations, machine frames, and associated mechanical equipment.
- Produce accurate bills of materials (BOMs) and technical documentation.
- Liaise with fabrication and machining departments to ensure designs are practical, efficient, and manufacturable.
- Support projects throughout the full lifecycle from concept design through manufacture, installation, and commissioning.
- Participate in design reviews and implement improvements based on feedback.
- Work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary engineering team.
- Communicate effectively with customers, suppliers, and internal stakeholders.
- Ensure designs comply with relevant engineering standards, safety requirements, and company procedures.
- Assist with problem\-solving and continuous improvement activities.
Essential
- Previous experience in the design of bespoke machinery and equipment.
- Experience designing:
- Conveyor systems
- Robotic applications and integrations
- Structural machine frames and fabricated assemblies
- Strong understanding of manufacturing processes, including:
- Fabrication
- Machining
- Assembly
- Ability to produce accurate engineering drawings and detailed technical documentation.
- Excellent problem\-solving and analytical skills.
- Ability to work independently and manage workload effectively.
- Strong communication skills with the ability to listen to and incorporate feedback from colleagues and customers.
- Team\-oriented approach with a willingness to support others when required.
- Good understanding of mechanical engineering principles.
- Experience using SolidWorks.
- Experience using AutoCAD.
- Knowledge of CE/UKCA machinery requirements and machinery risk assessments.
- HNC, HND, or equivalent qualification in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline or experience.

The ideal candidate will have a proven track record in designing bespoke machinery, conveyors, robotic systems, and fabricated machine structures. They will understand the practical capabilities and limitations of a fabrication and machining workshop and be capable of producing designs that are both innovative and manufacturable. They will thrive both independently and as part of a team, demonstrating excellent communication skills and a willingness to listen to and act upon feedback from colleagues and customers alike. Experience with SolidWorks and AutoCAD is highly desirable
