Marketing Officer
Marketing Officer
£27,500 per annum (Equivalent full\-time salary: £34,375\)
30 hours per week over 4 days
Purpose of the role
Unity in Community delivers a broad range of projects supporting local residents with employment, training, education, energy, housing and community support.
We are looking for an experienced and proactive Marketing \& Communications Officer to take responsibility for promoting Unity in Community, its projects and the opportunities available to local residents.
This will not simply be a social media role. The postholder will be expected to understand our different projects, their target audiences and their objectives, and develop marketing activity that directly supports engagement, recruitment and delivery.
A major focus will initially be the Humber Energy Action Team (HEAT2\), a two\-year Energy Redress funded programme supporting vulnerable households across the Humber region through energy advice, events, workshops, home energy surveys and practical energy\-saving measures. The role will also promote Unity in Community's wider provision, including the Adult Skills Fund, Study Programme, Local Growth Fund – Exploring Opportunities and Exploring Employment, alongside our community services and wider organisational activities.
Duties
- Develop and implement an organisation\-wide marketing and communications plan covering Unity in Community and its individual funded projects.
- Work closely with project managers and delivery teams to understand their targets, audiences, activity and upcoming opportunities.
- Take a lead role in marketing HEAT2, including promotion of energy advice, workshops, events, drop\-in sessions, household support and wider energy\-awareness campaigns.
- Promote Adult Skills Fund provision to adults who could benefit from training and skills development.
- Promote the 16–19 Study Programme, including construction, joinery and carpentry opportunities for young people. Unity's existing programme provides hands\-on construction experience for 16–18\-year\-olds and aims to build confidence and progression into employment or further learning.
- Promote Exploring Opportunities and Exploring Employment, ensuring residents and referral partners understand the employment and progression support available.
- Promote Unity's wider community activity, including community events, food support, Library of Stuff, energy projects, housing/property activity and new projects as they develop.
- Manage and regularly update Unity in Community's social media channels, ensuring content is current, engaging and reflects the full breadth of the organisation.
- Develop and maintain website content, ensuring residents can easily understand what support is available and how to access it.
- Produce high\-quality written and visual content including social media posts, leaflets, posters, newsletters, case studies, press releases, presentations and promotional material.
- Develop campaigns targeted at specific groups rather than relying solely on general social media advertising.
- Identify the best routes to reach different audiences, including community venues, schools and colleges, employers, Jobcentre Plus, local authorities, voluntary organisations and other referral partners.
- Build relationships with external organisations to increase referrals and awareness of Unity's services.
- Support the organisation's presence at community events, recruitment events, information days and partner events.
- Develop a forward calendar of campaigns, events and key dates across the organisation so marketing activity is planned rather than reactive.
- Gather photographs, participant stories, testimonials and case studies, ensuring appropriate consent is in place.
- Work with delivery staff to translate technical or funding\-led language into clear, accessible messages that residents understand.
- Maintain consistent Unity in Community branding across projects while complying with individual funder branding and publicity requirements.
- Liaise with local media where appropriate and identify opportunities for positive coverage of Unity's work.
- Monitor the effectiveness of marketing activity using appropriate measures such as enquiries, referrals, event attendance, website activity, social media engagement and conversion into programme participation.
- Provide regular updates to management on what activity has been undertaken, what has worked and where further promotion is required.
- Maintain appropriate records of marketing activity for funding, audit and monitoring purposes.
- Ensure marketing complies with GDPR, safeguarding, confidentiality and organisational policies.
- Undertake any other reasonable duties consistent with the level and purpose of the role.
We need someone who can take ownership of the function rather than somebody who needs to be given a list of posts to put on Facebook each week.
The successful candidate should be able to move comfortably between quite different audiences: a 17\-year\-old considering a construction course, an unemployed adult looking for work, somebody wanting to retrain, a vulnerable household struggling with energy costs, a Council officer making referrals, and a potential organisational partner.
They should therefore have:
- Strong experience in marketing, communications or a closely related role.
- Excellent written communication skills and the ability to write naturally for different audiences.
- Strong social media and digital marketing skills.
- Experience developing campaigns rather than simply maintaining social media accounts.
- The ability to produce professional promotional materials and digital content.
- Good knowledge of website/content management.
- Strong organisational skills and the ability to manage several campaigns and projects simultaneously.
- The confidence to work directly with project managers and challenge where marketing messages or approaches could be improved.
- The ability to work independently and generate ideas rather than waiting for instruction.
- An understanding of how marketing should contribute to measurable organisational outcomes such as enquiries, referrals, enrolments and engagement.
- Good interpersonal skills and the confidence to represent Unity in Community externally.
