Marine Engineer
Role Purpose
We are looking for an experienced and practical Marine Engineer to join the Aqueduct Services team.
The role involves carrying out a wide range of mechanical, electrical and general engineering work on narrowboats and other inland waterway craft. You will be responsible for diagnosing faults, completing servicing and repairs, installing equipment and helping our customers keep their boats safe, reliable and enjoyable to use.
Alongside engineering work, you will work as part of the wider Aqueduct team and may occasionally support boat movements, launching and recovery, hull maintenance and other boatyard activities.
This is a varied, hands\-on role suited to someone who enjoys solving problems, takes pride in their workmanship and wants to work within a busy marina and workshop environment.
Key Responsibilities
Marine Engineering
- Carry out servicing, maintenance, fault finding and repairs on marine diesel engines and associated systems.
- Diagnose mechanical faults and recommend appropriate repairs or replacement components.
- Carry out engine and equipment installations where required.
- Maintain and repair cooling, fuel, exhaust and propulsion systems.
- Carry out winterisation and recommissioning of boats.
- Diagnose and repair freshwater, waste and plumbing systems.
- Install, service and fault\-find diesel heating systems.
- Carry out basic welding and fabrication work where appropriate, including anode replacement and minor fabrication tasks.
- Diagnose faults on 12V and 24V DC electrical systems.
- Install and replace batteries, charging systems and associated electrical equipment.
- Install and fault\-find equipment such as pumps, lighting, bilge systems and other onboard equipment.
- Carry out electrical installations and modifications within the individual's level of competence.
- Assist with more complex electrical installations where required.
- Complete allocated work to the agreed standard and within scheduled timescales.
- Accurately record time spent against individual jobs.
- Complete job cards, worksheets and other workshop documentation clearly and accurately.
- Record additional work or faults discovered and report these to the Service Advisor or Workshop Manager before proceeding.
- Identify parts and materials required for jobs and communicate requirements promptly.
- Take care of company tools, equipment and workshop facilities.
- Maintain a clean, organised and professional working environment.
- Work with colleagues to achieve workshop productivity and efficiency targets without compromising quality or safety.

- As part of the wider marina team, you may also be required to assist with:
- Boat handling and movements around the marina and storage yard.
- Launching and recovering boats.
- Boat lifting operations and gantry lifts, subject to appropriate training.
- Pressure washing boat hulls.
- Preparing boats for hull coatings.
- Boat blacking and other hull maintenance.
- Moving equipment and materials around the site.
- General marina, workshop and yard maintenance.
- Supporting other departments during busy periods or with planned activities.
- Safety is everyone's responsibility at Aqueduct Marina. You will be expected to:
- Consider health and safety before starting any task.
- Follow company safe working procedures, risk assessments and method statements.
- Use the correct PPE, tools and equipment for each activity.
- Report unsafe conditions, damaged equipment, accidents and near misses.
- Carry out basic equipment and workplace checks where required.
- Maintain tidy and safe workshop and yard areas.
- Handle oils, fuels, chemicals and waste products responsibly.
- Work in a way that minimises environmental impact wherever reasonably possible.
Essential
- Practical mechanical engineering experience.
- Experience servicing and repairing diesel engines or similar mechanical equipment.
- Strong fault\-finding and problem\-solving ability.
- Ability to work safely and independently.
- Good practical and hands\-on skills.
- Ability to manage workload and complete jobs within agreed timescales.
- Good communication skills.
- Good attention to detail and pride in workmanship.
- Ability to work effectively as part of a team.
- Full UK driving licence.
