Job description
Connect to your Industry
We are looking for an experienced Energy Economist to join our growing UK Economic Advisory (EA) practice, with a focus on the energy transition, investment decisions, energy markets and modelling. The analysis and insights provided by the Energy Economics practice within EA are central to Deloitte’s most complex client decisions across Energy, Resources \& Industrials (ER\&I) and infrastructure investment. EA sits within the Infrastructure \& Real Estate (I\&RE) practice, and the team supports projects across Strategy, Risk \& Transactions Advisory and Deloitte’s broader ER\&I practice. You will help clients navigate the transition to net zero, major infrastructure investment decisions and rapidly evolving energy markets.
We combine rigorous economics and sector expertise with the scale of Deloitte’s wider capabilities. As we continue to expand our energy offering, we are building the Energy Economics practice for the future by developing our existing tools and intellectual property into AI\-enabled energy data, models, investment platforms and digital tools. You will have the opportunity to shape distinctive propositions and deliver integrated advice to Deloitte’s clients, including strategic insights, financial advice, transaction support and advice on policy and regulatory decisions across the UK and global network to help deliver the energy transition.
Connect to your career at Deloitte
Deloitte drives progress by bringing together broad expertise across strategy, regulation, risk, transactions, technology, tax and legal services. We invest in outstanding people and create opportunities for them to lead challenging work, build trusted client relationships and develop distinctive technical and commercial expertise.
What unites us at Deloitte? It is our approach to the thousands of decisions we make each day—our behaviours, beliefs and attitudes; in short, our values. Globally, we lead with integrity, care for one another, foster inclusion and collaborate for measurable impact. These five shared values guide every decision and action, helping us deliver impact where it matters most.
Connect to your opportunity
Our Energy Economics team provides advice where energy markets, public policy, regulation and commercial strategy intersect. We help clients understand market developments, design and assess policy and regulatory interventions, evaluate investments, and make evidence\-based decisions under uncertainty. This Manager role is central to our growth: you will lead high\-quality client delivery while helping shape our energy\-transition proposition and commercial pipeline.
Examples of projects you might undertake include:
- Advising investors, corporates and public\-sector clients on energy\-transition opportunities, market entry, investment and commercial strategy, investment appraisal and business cases;
- Energy market outlooks, price forecasting and scenario analysis to support investment and strategy;
- Economic assessment of power\-market reform, subsidy mechanisms, carbon pricing and other energy\-transition policies;
- Regulatory strategy, price controls, charging frameworks and cost\-benefit analysis for energy networks and utilities;
- Power\-market, whole\-system and optimisation modelling to assess generation, networks, flexibility, hydrogen and decarbonisation pathways
- Commercial and strategic advice for energy companies, infrastructure investors and major energy users
- Economic appraisal and impact assessment of low\-carbon technologies, infrastructure and transition programmes.
Connect to your skills and professional experience
You will bring a strong grounding in economics, quantitative analysis or a closely related discipline, typically supported by a relevant postgraduate qualification. We expect candidates to hold a master’s degree or above in economics and to have approximately 6–8 years of relevant professional experience, although we will consider the depth, relevance and progression of experience rather than applying a rigid threshold.
- Substantial experience in the energy sector gained in consulting, government, a regulator, an energy company, a system operator, an energy\-sector investor, academia or a related organisation
- Expertise in at least one of the following areas: energy policy, economic regulation, energy\-market analysis, energy\-system modelling, economic appraisal, investment strategy, cost\-benefit analysis, impact assessment, market design or regulatory finance, with the ability to connect technical analysis to commercial and policy decisions
- Experience managing projects, workplans, budgets and multidisciplinary teams, while maintaining high standards of analytical quality
- The ability to communicate complex economic and technical findings clearly to senior, non\-technical audiences
- Experience building client relationships and contributing to proposals, account development or other commercial activity
- A collaborative leadership style with a track record of coaching and developing colleagues.
- Strong quantitative capability and practical Python coding skills for data analysis, model development, automation and quality assurance
- Experience using energy\-market, dispatch, capacity\-expansion or system\-planning models, including tools such as PLEXOS, GAMS, TIMES or comparable frameworks
- Knowledge of UK, European or international power and gas markets, energy networks, hydrogen, carbon markets or flexibility
- Experience combining economic analysis and commercial and investment strategy with engineering and broader financing perspectives.
In this role, you will:
- Manage diverse energy\-economics engagements across the energy sector, taking responsibility for scope, approach, delivery, budgets and quality
- Lead business development and practice management initiatives that support the growth of our energy\-transition offering
- Build strong relationships with clients and with colleagues across Deloitte’s Economic Advisory, energy and wider multidisciplinary communities in the UK and internationally;
- Manage, coach and develop diverse teams within an inclusive culture that values individual perspectives and contributions
- Contribute to business development by writing compelling proposals for prospective clients;
- Develop analytical approaches, AI\-enabled data solutions and energy models to address complex energy policy, regulatory, market and investment questions
- Develop practical solutions through collaborative discussion in multidisciplinary teams and with senior client and stakeholder groups
- Pursue ongoing professional development, including building expertise in emerging energy\-transition issues, analytical methods and leadership
- Be willing to travel domestically and internationally for short periods, where required by client engagements.
Economic Advisory is part of our Strategy, Risk \& Transactions Advisory business and sits within Infrastructure \& Real Estate. Our Advisory teams help clients navigate risks, make major strategic and investment decisions, support transactions and deliver transformational change to future\-proof their businesses. You will collaborate regularly with other Advisory colleagues to provide comprehensive client advice across a wide range of engagements.
Infrastructure \& Real Estate
Our Infrastructure \& Real Estate teams provide trusted advice to CEOs and their organisations. From launching new business ventures to anticipating emerging risks and collaborating with other teams, we work on a diverse range of projects. You will collaborate closely with colleagues on infrastructure, capital programmes and strategy engagements where our economic expertise provides Deloitte with a distinctive advantage.
Personal independence
Standard industry regulations and controls apply at Deloitte. These controls provide essential legal protection for both you and the firm. We are subject to various audit regulations, some of which require certain colleagues to adhere to specific personal independence constraints (e.g., regarding financial interests and employment relationships). This may restrict you and your immediate family members from holding certain financial interests (shares, funds, bonds, etc.) in audit clients and prohibit certain employment relationships (e.g., secondary employment with SEC audit clients while employed by the firm). The recruitment team will provide further details as you progress through the recruitment process, or you can contact the Independence team.
