Job overview The post provides dedicated junior doctor support to the Plastic Surgery inpatient service. The doctor will work closely with the Plastic Surgery consultants, registrars and wider multidisciplinary team to provide safe, effective and compassionate care to patients admitted under Plastic Surgery.
The post offers excellent experience in the management of a broad range of plastic surgical patients, including patients undergoing complex reconstructive surgery, skin cancer surgery, breast reconstruction, hand surgery, trauma and complex wound management..
Main duties of the job Main Duties and Responsibilities
- Provide day-to-day medical care for patients admitted under Plastic Surgery.
- Review patients on the ward and respond appropriately to clinical concerns.
- Participate in consultant and registrar-led ward rounds.
- Complete admission assessments, clinical reviews, documentation and discharge summaries.
- Review and act on investigation results, including blood tests and imaging.
- Prescribe and review medications under appropriate supervision.
- Liaise with nursing staff, therapists and other members of the multidisciplinary team.
- Communicate effectively with patients and their relatives/carers regarding their care, within the appropriate level of responsibility.
- Assist with discharge planning and ensure appropriate follow-up arrangements are made.
- Escalate deteriorating or clinically complex patients promptly to senior medical staff.
- Attend and contribute to departmental teaching and training.
- Participate in clinical governance, audit and quality improvement activities where appropriate.
- Maintain accurate and timely clinical documentation.
- Work within the limits of competence and seek senior support whenever required.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities What the Department Offers
This is an excellent opportunity for the doctor to develop a strong foundation in inpatient surgical care within a supportive Plastic Surgery team. The post provides broad exposure to reconstructive and plastic surgical patients, with regular access to senior trainees and consultant supervision.
The department places a strong emphasis on patient safety, teamwork, education and development of junior doctors.
Person specificationQualificationsEssential criteria • Eligible for full GMC registration with a licence to practise
- MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
- Ability to recognise an acutely unwell patient and escalate appropriately
- Safe prescribing and clinical decision-making appropriate to level of training
- Ability to work within professional and personal limits of competence
- Ability to communicate effectively with patients, relatives and colleagues
- Understanding of confidentiality, consent and professional responsibilities
