Role: KTP Associate – Structural Innovation Engineer (Maritime Heritage)

Contract: Fixed term – 18 months

Location: London

Salary: £35,454 per annum

This is a University of Greenwich role in collaboration with Beckett Rankine. The role taker will be employed by the University of Greenwich, and will be based from and work in the Beckett Rankine office in Westminster, Central London.

About the role

Are you an ambitious engineer with a passion for maritime heritage and a talent for computational modelling? We are offering a unique 18\-month Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) Associate role on an Innovate UK funded project to bridge the gap between cutting\-edge academic research and real\-world industrial application. This project is a collaboration between the University of Greenwich and the maritime engineering consultancy firm Beckett Rankine.

In this high\-impact role, the successful candidate will lead and manage a project that will develop and apply an advanced methodology for the structural analysis of historic timber ships, using Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and rheological modelling. The KTP Associate will work under the supervision of experts at both partnering organisations.

The role will involve:

  • Knowledge Transfer: Acting as the link between academic and industrial partners in the targeted knowledge transfer and development of an advanced modelling methodology for conservation structural analysis of historic wooden ships and imbedding the new capability within the company.

  • Computational Modelling: Creating sophisticated 3D geometric models of complex, historic wooden vessels.

  • Advanced Simulations: Utilising aggregate rheological properties and advanced “smearing” techniques to create robust finite element (FE) structural models and analysis framework.

  • Structural Intervention: Designing and evaluating engineering solutions for the conservation of wooden ships and ensuring their long\-term preservation.

  • Project Management: Leading the KTP project lifecycle, managing milestones and reporting. Disseminating research and developments through publications and training (journals, conferences, workshops).

Why Join Us?

  • Dual Mentorship: Benefit from the combined expertise of industry leaders at Beckett Rankine and top\-tier academics at the University of Greenwich.

  • Professional Pedigree: Establish yourself as a leading expert in the high\-value heritage sector and advanced structural modelling.

  • Innovation Autonomy: Set new global standards for the technical analysis of historic vessels.

  • Environment: Work in a vibrant, independent consultancy environment as a member of Beckett Rankine’s engineering team.

Essential Qualifications \& Skills:

  • Education: A Bachelor’s degree (minimum) in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, or Naval Architecture.

  • Technical Edge: Practical experience in 3D modelling and a deep theoretical understanding of FEA and structural engineering principles and design.

  • Analytical Rigour: The ability to translate complex and uncertain data into practical, structural engineering solutions.

  • Communication Skills: A natural collaborator capable of presenting complex ideas to both academic boards and commercial stakeholders.
