Job Title: Healthcare Assistant
Department: Cardiac Cath Lab
Reports to: Cath Lab Manager

Overall Purpose of Job
Responsible for assisting with patient needs in Cath lab and recovery unit. To provide exceptional patient care in an environment where quality, respect, caring and compassion are at the centre of all we do. Phlebotomy experience and willingness to learn new skills preferred (Such as preparing sterile trolleys, checking expiries etc.).
Key Responsibilities and Deliverables
- Assists with patient activities and care as assigned by the Nurse Manager or Clinical Coordinator.
- Demonstrate knowledge of medical surgical inventory.
- Desire to learn aseptic technique to prepare sterile trolleys for respective procedures.
- Maintain a good record of stock items and expiry dates.
- Collect blood samples and transport them to laboratory.
- Maintains patient privacy and confidentiality of information and records at all times.
- Maintains positive attitude during interaction with all hospital staff, patients and visitors.
- Provides and maintains a clean, safe environment, performs and/or assists others to perform proper aseptic technique, isolation procedures and infection control measures.
- Maintains patient care areas with appropriate supplies.
- Assist with cleaning trolleys and preparing bed for next coming patient.
- Adheres to internal controls established for the department.
- Performs related duties as required.
- The timely identification and communication of any issues and complaints to the Nurse Manager or Clinical Coordinator.
Qualifications
- Leaving Certificate or equivalent.
- Completion of an approved QQI Level 5 course for Health Care Assistants or an equivalent Nursing qualification required.
- Minimum 2 years' experience as HCA. Phlebotomy trained or have a willingness to learn.
- Strong communication, decision making and interpersonal skills are necessary.
- Ability to multi task, maintain and receive orders.
- Intravenous cannulation and venipuncture.
- Record ECGs.
- Record patient Vital Signs and have an understanding of EWS.
- Able to put orders in meditech.
- Able to maintain patient care areas with appropriate supplies/equipment. Keep the cubicle ready for patient admission.
The post holder is expected to:
- Attend in a timely manner all mandatory education sessions.
- Ensure their professional and personal persona positively reflect Beacon Hospital.
- Attend appropriate study days and courses.
- Participate in their performance review with their Nurse Manager.
- Utilise effective time management skills.
- Maintain professional appearance and dress code.
- Comply with guidelines for absence or tardiness.
- Attend staff meetings, reads all work\-related email and other postings.
- All employees are expected to remain flexible to meet the needs of the hospital, which may include floating to other departments to assist as patient needs fluctuate.
- Wear Identification Badge when working.
