Accountable to: Chief Operating Officer
Location: On site, Wells, Somerset.

The Health and Safety Officer is responsible for promoting and maintaining a safe, healthy, and compliant working environment across the organisation. The role ensures compliance with health and safety legislation, company policies, and industry best practices through regular inspections, risk assessments, training, incident investigation, and contractor management.
Key ResponsibilitiesHealth \& Safety Compliance
- Ensure compliance with all relevant Health and Safety legislation, regulations, and company policies.
- Maintain and update the site's Health \& Safety management systems, audit plans, and compliance trackers.
- Liaise with external Health \& Safety consultants and attend weekly review meetings.
- Maintain Health \& Safety notice boards and ensure statutory information is displayed.
- Prepare, review, update, and implement Risk Assessments and Safe Systems of Work (SSOW).
- Conduct on\-site risk assessments and recommend appropriate control measures.
- Complete and maintain COSHH Risk Assessments for all hazardous substances used on site.
- Provide guidance on the safe handling, storage, and disposal of hazardous materials.
- Review and maintain accident and incident records.
- Investigate workplace accidents, incidents, and near misses to identify root causes.
- Prepare detailed accident investigation reports and recommend corrective and preventative actions.
- Monitor trends and implement improvement initiatives to reduce workplace risks.
- Conduct regular workplace inspections and safety audits across all departments.
- Review weekly departmental safety inspections and ensure corrective actions are completed.
- Gather and analyse safety performance data to support continuous improvement.
- Ensure periodic inspections of Mobile Handling Equipment (MHE) are completed in accordance with LOLER regulations.
- Coordinate specialist contractors working on site.
- Review contractor Risk Assessments and Method Statements (RAMS) before work commences.
- Monitor contractor activities to ensure compliance with site safety procedures.
- Issue and oversee Permit\-to\-Work systems, including Hot Work Permits, ensuring work areas remain safe and operational.
- Carry out and record weekly fire alarm and emergency lighting tests.
- Support emergency planning, fire safety compliance, and evacuation procedures.
- Deliver Health \& Safety inductions for all new employees.
- Provide ongoing refresher training and promote a positive health and safety culture throughout the business.
- Organise external training courses, including First Aid, Dangerous Goods, and other mandatory compliance training.
- Advise managers and employees on Health \& Safety best practices and legal requirements.
- Promote a proactive safety culture across the organisation.
- Identify hazards, unsafe practices, and opportunities for improvement.
- Highlight significant Health \& Safety concerns to management and recommend corrective actions.
- Support internal and external audits and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives.
- NEBOSH General Certificate (or equivalent Health \& Safety qualification).
- Sound knowledge of UK Health \& Safety legislation.
- Experience carrying out risk assessments, COSHH assessments, and incident investigations.
- Experience managing contractors and Permit\-to\-Work systems.
- Strong organisational, communication, and problem\-solving skills.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office applications.
- Ability to work independently and prioritise workloads effectively.
- Experience within a manufacturing/FMCG/cosmetics industry.
- Knowledge of LOLER, PUWER, and Fire Safety Regulations.
- First Aid qualification.
