Group Transport Manager
About the Role
We are seeking an experienced and hands\-on Group Transport Manager to lead and oversee both our transport and warehouse operations.
This is a senior operational management role with responsibility for fleet compliance, driver management, warehouse performance, people management, health \& safety, and continuous improvement. Reporting directly to senior management, you will play a key role in ensuring the business operates safely, efficiently, and in full compliance with all regulatory requirements.
The successful candidate will be responsible for managing transport operations whilst also providing leadership and direction to the warehouse team, ensuring both functions work together effectively to deliver excellent service to customers, charity partners, and recycling stakeholders.
Key Responsibilities
Transport Management
- Hold responsibility for the Company's Operator Licence and Transport Compliance.
- Ensure full compliance with DVSA regulations, Operator Licence requirements, driver hours, and Working Time Directive regulations.
- Manage fleet maintenance schedules, inspections, defect reporting, MOT planning, and vehicle compliance.
- Lead and manage a team of drivers and transport staff.
- Plan, optimise, and review collection and delivery routes to maximise efficiency.
- Monitor transport KPIs including vehicle utilisation, fuel consumption, service levels, and costs.
- Investigate accidents, incidents, and insurance claims where required.
- Manage external transport providers and subcontractors.
- Oversee shipping, customs documentation, and export logistics where required.
- Provide regular operational and performance reports to senior management.
- Provide leadership and oversight of warehouse and yard operations.
- Manage goods\-in, storage, processing, stock control, and dispatch activities.
- Ensure operational targets, productivity levels, and quality standards are achieved.
- Develop and improve warehouse systems, procedures, and working practices.
- Monitor warehouse KPIs and implement corrective actions where required.
- Ensure effective use of warehouse space and equipment.
- Maintain strong communication between transport and warehouse teams to maximise operational efficiency.
- Lead, manage, and develop transport and warehouse teams.
- Recruit, train, induct, and support employees.
- Conduct performance reviews and manage performance issues where required.
- Promote teamwork, accountability, and continuous improvement.
- Ensure all staff are trained in safe systems of work and company procedures.
- Maintain high standards of health, safety, environmental compliance, and security.
- Ensure all transport and warehouse activities are conducted safely and legally.
- Implement and monitor SOPs, risk assessments, and safe working practices.
- Lead investigations into incidents, near misses, and operational issues.
- Drive a positive safety culture throughout the business.
- Identify opportunities to improve service levels, productivity, efficiency, and profitability.
- Review systems and processes to support future growth.
- Work with senior management to support operational strategy and business development.
Essential
- Valid Transport Manager CPC.
- Minimum 5 years' experience managing transport operations.
- Proven leadership experience within logistics, warehousing, or a similar operational environment.
- Strong knowledge of Operator Licence compliance and DVSA requirements.
- Experience managing drivers, warehouse staff, and operational teams.
- Excellent organisational and planning skills.
- Strong people management and communication abilities.
- Good understanding of health \& safety and compliance requirements.
- Competent user of Microsoft Office, including Excel.
- Confident decision\-maker with the ability to manage multiple priorities.
- Experience within recycling, reuse, waste management, charity collections, or environmental services.
- Knowledge of FORS standards.
- Experience managing both transport and warehouse functions.
- Experience of route optimisation and fleet management systems.
