Purpose of the role: The purpose of this Genetic Counsellor post is to contribute to the provision of a comprehensive, specialist, high quality genetic counselling service for patients and families at risk of inherited cancer.
In conjunction with the Consultant Oncologist/Geneticists and the rest of the Cancer Genetics team, the post
holder will:
- Comprehend the medical facts that pertain to a case, including the diagnosis, potential for inherited cancer predisposition and available risk management
- Appreciate the way heredity contributes to risk, and the implications of this for patients and their family members
- Understand the options (including genetic testing) for dealing with inherited risk, and assist patients in making person\-centred decisions about these options
