PHOENIX INDUSTRIAL SUPPLIES \- *General Manager*

Two\-site MRO and industrial consumables business, Cardiff and Cross Hands

Full time, permanent. Reporting to Owners

Salary: Competitive, negotiable plus bonus

Phoenix Industrial Supplies is a long\-established supplier of PPE, fixings, tooling and general industrial consumables to engineering, manufacturing and construction customers across South and West Wales. The business is at a turning point. We are looking for a General Manager to take day\-to\-day ownership of the operation, modernise how it runs, and lead it through a significant period of growth.

The opportunity: Phoenix supports a broad customer base from two sites, with our largest customer entering a major investment cycle that will substantially increase demand over the next twelve to eighteen months. To meet that demand, and to grow the rest of the customer book alongside it, we need a hands\-on operational leader who can professionalise the business, sharpen the commercial model and build the team.

This is a rare opportunity to step into a business with strong customer relationships, a loyal team and clear growth ahead, and to put your own stamp on how it operates.

What you will lead

  • Day\-to\-day operations across both sites, including stores, picking, despatch, deliveries, office and customer service

  • The full commercial cycle, from quotation and pricing through to invoicing, margin management and customer account growth

  • A small, capable team of office staff, storemen, drivers and purchasing colleagues

  • Supplier relationships, purchasing strategy and stock investment decisions

  • Modernisation of core processes, including stock control, pricing, order capture and the use of our Pegasus Opera 3 ERP

  • Performance reporting to the ownership group, with a clear monthly rhythm on sales, margin, stock and service
*What we will deliver together in the first twelve months*

These are the priorities you will lead, but you will not be tackling them alone. The ownership group is actively involved in the business and is committed to working alongside you, providing backing, resources and decision\-making support. Specialist resource will also be provided to work with you on the key elements of delivery, including stock control, pricing, digital and process change, so you have expert input on the technical workstreams as well as owner\-level support on the commercial calls. You will have a partner at owner level, not a brief and a closed door.

  • Bring stock under proper control, with accurate Opera data, bin locations, minimum levels and reorder triggers

  • Tighten the pricing model so quotes are built on current supplier costs and target margins, not memory

  • Replace manual, paper\-heavy workflows with digital order capture, electronic proof of delivery and cleaner cross\-site working

  • Position Phoenix to absorb a step change in demand from our largest customer without service falling over

  • Open up growth with our wider customer base, including targeted account development and new business

  • Strengthen the team through clear roles, training and succession, reducing reliance on any single person
About you

ESSENTIAL

  • Proven general management or senior operational leadership in industrial distribution, MRO, builders' merchants, engineering supplies or a similar trade\-counter and trade\-supply environment

  • Full commercial fluency, including pricing, margin, supplier negotiation and customer account management

  • Confident with ERP and stock systems, ideally Pegasus Opera, Sage 200, Kerridge K8 or equivalent

  • Track record of process improvement in a small or mid\-sized operation, with a bias for practical, get\-it\-done change

  • Strong people leader who can coach a small team, set standards and build accountability without losing the family feel of the business
DESIRABLE
  • Background working with steel, heavy engineering, power, water, food and drink, or other industrial end markets

  • Experience supporting a customer through a large capital project or production ramp up

  • Exposure to digital tooling beyond ERP, including barcode and label systems, mobile picking, customer portals and electronic POD

  • Understanding of consignment stock, vendor managed inventory and key account commercial models

  • Experience reporting to a private ownership group, founders or family shareholders

  • Comfortable on the warehouse floor and in front of customers, not just behind a desk

  • Full UK driving licence, with the flexibility to spend time at both sites
About Phoenix:

Phoenix Industrial Supplies has been part of the South Wales industrial supply chain for many years. We operate from two sites, with a long\-standing customer base that ranges from large steel and process plants through to mechanical and electrical contractors, civils and local trade customers.

We are privately owned, with the owners actively involved in the direction of the business. We are not a corporate distributor. Decisions are made quickly, relationships matter, and the people who work here have done so for a long time. We want a General Manager who values that, builds on it, and brings the structure and pace that allow the business to grow.

Package Competitive salary, negotiable depending on experience Performance\-related bonus linked to clear operational and commercial targets Company vehicle or car allowance Pension and standard benefits
