Financial Controller
Purpose of the role
As a hands\-on Financial Controller at the centre of a modern, growing multi\-depot hire group, you will own the day\-to\-day finance function of the group: a clean, timely month end, tight control of a substantial hire fleet on the balance sheet, reliable cash forecasting and the administration of the group's asset finance and working capital facilities. The role reports directly to the Chief Executive and carries responsibility for the finance team.
The group is growing, with a further depot being acquired, so the finance function has to run cleanly while it absorbs new sites and new systems, and proactively seek process improvements and automations. This is a hands on role in a business where the Financial Controller is close to the operation and to the Chief Executive rather than one layer of a large finance department. The scope of the role will grow with the group.
Roles and responsibilities
- Reporting. Own the month\-end close to a fixed deadline, produce the management accounts and the board pack, and manage the statutory accounts, the audit file and the relationship with the auditors. Consolidate across group entities and report profitability by depot.
- Fleet and fixed assets. Maintain a fixed asset register that holds up under scrutiny for a large hire fleet, including additions, disposals, depreciation policy and finance lease accounting. Report fleet return on investment, utilisation and hire rates, and support capital expenditure decisions on new fleet.
- Cash and funding. Own the rolling cash forecast. Administer the group's asset finance, hire purchase and working capital facilities, prepare funder reporting, and monitor covenant headroom. Support the Chief Executive on refinancing and new facilities.
- Control and compliance. Run purchase ledger, sales ledger and credit control, and hold the disciplines that protect margin: damage recharges, cross\-hire reconciliation, supplier statement reconciliation and intercompany balances. Own VAT, payroll oversight and statutory filings.
- Systems. Work confidently across the hire management system and the finance ledger, currently Syrinx and Sage, and improve the reporting drawn from both. Lead reporting and systems improvement projects through to completion.
- Team and business partnering. Manage and develop the finance team, and work directly with depot managers and operational directors so that the numbers are understood and acted on outside the finance office.
- Acquisitions. Support due diligence and the integration of acquired businesses onto group systems and reporting, an active area for the group.
Owning the funder and lender relationships, and negotiating facilities and covenants.
Writing a board pack that leads with a commercial narrative rather than variance tables, and presenting it.
Capital allocation and fleet investment strategy, including pricing and rate decisions.

Board presence: influencing directors who do not report to you, and holding a position under challenge.
Pay: £65,000\.00\-£80,000\.00 per year
