About us
------------

The UCL Institute of Archaeology (IoA) was established in 1937 as a centre for archaeological training. The Institute is the largest university\-based archaeological institution in Britain, with more than 600 students, from many different countries, age groups and backgrounds, and more than 70 academic and administrative staff. Currently ranked 3rd in the world for subject in the QS World Rankings 2023, the Institute of Archaeology \- which is situated within the UCL Faculty of Social and Historical Sciences, itself ranked 14th in the Times Higher World Rankings 2023 \- provides a world\-class environment for students at all levels of study.

Archaeology South\-East (ASE) is the commercial archaeology division of IoA, working with developers, government agencies, local communities and a range of external and staff specialists to make sense of the past. ASE staff play an active role in IoA teaching, research, field schools and especially the BA Archaeology with Placement Year, which includes a 12\-month placement at ASE.

About the role
------------------

To act as the dedicated logistical, teaching, and welfare support for archaeological field training of IoA students, including two first\-year training excavations per year, and other IoA British field projects as required (three to four projects per year). The postholder will also support with post\-excavation training taking place in the IoA throughout the year. This 1\.0FTE role involves participation in field schools, which run from the beginning of May to the end of August each year. This will require the postholder to camp alongside students, working early mornings, evenings, and be part of an ‘on call’ rota overnight. An additional one\-off out of hours supplement will be paid in recognition. Where necessary, they should also be present for the set\-up and close\-down of each UCL\-run site (c. 2–3 days at the beginning and end of the season). The working pattern from September to April will be lighter (estimated at 0\.6 FTE) to recognise this weighting and it will only be possible to take annual leave outside of the field season. This post is available to start immediately.
