Engineering Manager

About the role

Balfour Beatty Power Transmission and Distribution are looking for an Engineering Manager to focus on their major Skye Reinforcement project.

The position will require regular travel to the Isle of Skye.

The Engineering Manager provides strategic engineering and design management for a selected project's design delivery, management and engineering governances, from initial opportunity, through bid development and contract negotiation, mobilisation, and delivery, and finally project completion and archiving. This includes strong leadership and control of a multi\-disciplinary team comprising engineering resources at all levels.

Engineering Managers are expected to work closely with the Project Manager and lead positive engagement with internal and external stakeholders to manage the project scope’s budget, risks and programme. This is expected to include coordinating with all the functions within Balfour Beatty, with an emphasis on providing the right engineering solutions both from a technical and value engineering perspective.

The Engineering manager will work with the technical team to ensure resource capability and availability for their project following successful handover and throughout the Project Delivery, including the management of change and optioneering necessary for construction projects.

What you'll be doing Accountabilities

• Manages and coordinates the design solution on behalf of Design \& Engineering in line with the Project Manager.


• Manages a team of indirect reports to achieve project delivery, coordinating all disciplines involved on the project: Civil, Structural, Line Design, Substations, Cabling.


• Lead the Design Engineers and interfaces with other parties, through effective communication.


• Design management for safe, quality delivery of engineering scope of project(s) – Monitoring programme, budget, quality, change and safety on behalf (and in liaison with) the Project Manager.


• Leading safety, constructability, and value for money reviews with the design team with input from construction and operations teams.


• Ensure adherence to Governance processes, Assurance process, the Gated Lifecycle and Right First Time, representing Design \& Engineering at all stages of the project lifecycle, tender through to commissioning


• Compiles the project’s monthly reporting, including programme, cost and risk management.


• Manages interfaces and stakeholders, both internal and external to the department.


• Produces and maintains key project documents.


• Seeks opportunities for continuous improvement, to deliver each project safer, better, faster and more


• Identifies and manages scope change through the change management process (Design scope) with support from the Project Manager and commercial team


• Provides the technical input to the contractual management.


• Regularly attends site and actively leads engagement with and support to Operations during project delivery.


• Supports investigation and resolution of Non\-Conformance Reports.


• Promotes Safety and Sustainability by Design and Right First Time on all design works, ensuring the clients assurance process is administered in accordance with specific requirements


• Ensures BIM implementation on each project.


• Set up and maintenance of PARAM, according to the project WBS (and in conjunction with the DDL)

Who we're looking for

You will have the following:

• Experience of engineering, design delivery management or other delivery management role.


• Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.


• Understanding of and belief to drive health and safety principles in line with Balfour Beatty’s Zero Harm philosophy and a safety by design approach.


• Experience of managing budgets.


• Sound engineering knowledge and experience.
