United Utilities’ Energy Generation team is looking for a skilled and motivated Field Service Engineer with a strong mechanical core to support the performance of our renewable and low carbon energy assets.

This is a permanent role based in Davyhulme, working a Monday to Friday, 37\-hour week.

In this hands\-on position, you will work with large\-scale, high\-performance equipment including spark\-ignition and dual\-fuel engines, combined heat and power (CHP) systems, and associated plant. You will play a key role in ensuring these assets remain safe, efficient, and reliable, directly contributing to sustainable energy production.

This is a varied and engaging role where you will apply your diagnostic thinking and mechanical expertise to operate, maintain, and repair complex energy systems. Working both independently and collaboratively, you will take ownership of fault finding, maintenance, and continuous improvement activities. You will be part of a forward\-thinking environment, with ongoing training and development to support your growth within the renewable energy sector.

What You'll Be Doing
------------------------

You will take a hands\-on approach to maintaining and optimising critical energy generation assets, including:

  • Servicing and repairing large internal combustion engines (CHP units), alternators, and heat recovery systems

  • Diagnosing mechanical and electrical faults, using a logical and methodical approach to minimise downtime

  • Adjusting combustion settings and control parameters to ensure efficient, stable, and compliant engine performance

  • Maintaining gas\-to\-grid systems, filtration units (including siloxane and carbon filters), and emissions control equipment

  • Monitoring performance data such as temperature, pressure, and emissions to proactively identify and resolve issues
Skills \& Knowledge
-----------------------

You will be a mechanically biased engineer with a strong practical mindset and a passion for understanding how things work.

We welcome candidates from a range of backgrounds, including HGV, marine, agricultural, or automotive engineering, who are looking to apply their skills in a new and growing sector.

  • A solid background in mechanical engineering, whether through formal qualifications (e.g. NVQ Level 3, City \& Guilds) or time\-served experience

  • Experience working with internal combustion engines, including fuel systems, cooling, lubrication, and ignition

  • Strong diagnostic and fault\-finding capability, with a logical and investigative approach rather than simply replacing parts

  • Comfortable using diagnostic tools, instrumentation, or software to support maintenance and repair activities

  • A willingness to learn new skills in areas such as high voltage systems, gas safety, and industrial process controls (training provided)

  • A proactive, hands\-on approach, with the ability to work both independently and as part of a team

Why This Role
-----------------

This is an excellent opportunity to apply your mechanical expertise within the fast\-growing renewable energy sector. You will work on complex, large\-scale equipment, solving real engineering challenges and making a tangible impact on sustainable energy production.

We invest in our people, providing opportunities to develop skills in advanced process control, gas\-to\-grid technologies, and electrical systems. In return for your commitment, you will benefit from a competitive salary and strong development opportunities to support a long\-term career with United Utilities.

Benefits:

  • A generous annual leave package of 26 days, which increases to 30 days after four years of service (increases one day per year), in addition to 8 bank holidays

  • A competitive pension scheme with up to 14% employer contribution, 21% combined, and life cover

  • Up to 7\.5% performance\-related bonus scheme, as well as recognition awards for outstanding achievements
