Director of Teaching and Learning
Merrywood is a trauma informed accredited school and is rated Outstanding. We have developed a conceptual curriculum based on child development and the national curriculum, aimed at pupils with additional needs. As the school grows in size we are looking for an academic expert to take control of the quality of education across all three campuses. The sites are based in the London borough of Sutton, Tadworth Surrey and Abinger Surrey.
We are passionate about raising the standards of education for children who have experienced adverse life experiences, have special educational needs and have been excluded from mainstream settings.
The ideal candidate should have a wealth of experience and knowledge in curriculum development, teaching and learning and leading strong teams. The role will allow the right person to bring their knowledge and experience into a clear teaching and learning framework with development tools so that all teachers are provided with strong coaching and mentoring within their role.
The vision is to create a teachers development framework shaped by our current teaching pedagogy and curriculum. The Director of Teaching and Learning will lead alongside the Chief Operating Officer and Executive head.
Monitoring and management of Teaching and Learning Teaching
- To encourage teachers’ active engagement with professional studies to enhance teaching and learning.
- To arrange and co\-ordinate academic INSET days.
- To create in\-school CPD opportunities for staff.
- To facilitate mutual observation amongst teaching staff.
- To undertake regular learning walks, lesson observations and departmental work scrutiny and offer support and training where required.
- To observe all new teaching staff in their first year of teaching.
- To monitor classes where further support or intervention may be required.
- To work on the overview of the teaching staff appraisal schedule.
- To keep up\-to\-date with the ISI framework and standards, with a particular focus on Section 2 quality of education.
- To shadow pupils from different year groups throughout the year as well as individual pupils, where appropriate.
- To meet with leaders termly to review the academic progress of pupils.
- To engage with leaders where further intervention is required.
- To collate and analyse data and academic tracing with the leadership team.
- To monitor the academic progress of pupils identified as likely not to meet expected progress.
- To manage resources and send requirements in partnership with the Sendco.
- To lead the quality of education, teaching and learning and curriculum across all campuses.
- To arrange assemblies and resources for tutorials to develop strong skills of metacognition, executive function and effective study habits across the school.
- To recruit staff/additional staff for the school as necessary in partnership with principal and head teacher.
- To liaise with the leaders regularly on SEND pupils and exam access arrangements.
- To develop and keep refreshed an understanding of SEND issues and regulation.
- To report to the advisory Body and executive leaders termly.
- Develop a digital strategy for learning.
- To keep up to date with developments in AI.
- To support staff and pupils with digital literacy.
- To manage CPD requests and the CPD budget.
- To liaise with teacher training providers.
- To manage the whole\-school experience of all trainees, plan schedules with colleagues accordingly and complete all necessary paperwork.
- To observe trainees termly and conduct regular meetings.
- To understand the regulation and liaise with providers.
- To support the development of leaders and subject mentors.
- To observe ECTs half\-termly and offer feedback.
- To review assessment documentation.
- To offer appropriate and regular ECT professional studies training.

Pay: £65,000\.00\-£80,000\.00 per year
