Dental Nurse/Trainee Dental Nurse
We are looking for a friendly, organised and patient\-focused Dental Receptionist / Trainee Dental Nurse to join our welcoming practice in Muirhead.
This is primarily a reception\-based role, acting as the first point of contact for our patients and supporting the smooth day\-to\-day running of the practice. However, we are ideally looking for someone who either has previous dental nursing experience and is able to provide occasional chairside cover when required, or who is enthusiastic about completing dental nurse training and developing into a dual\-skilled member of the team.
This is an excellent opportunity for someone who enjoys working with people, is confident in a busy front\-of\-house environment, and would like to build a longer\-term career within dentistry.
The role
Your main responsibility will be to provide a professional, welcoming and efficient reception service. You will also have the opportunity to support the clinical team by providing dental nursing cover when needed, subject to your experience, training and scope of practice.
Reception responsibilities
- Welcome patients and visitors warmly, ensuring they feel comfortable and well supported from arrival through to departure.
- Answer incoming calls, make outbound calls, respond to emails and manage messages for clinicians, prioritising urgent matters appropriately.
- Book, amend and cancel appointments using the practice management system.
- Manage recalls, waiting lists and appointment availability to help maximise chair time and ensure an efficient patient journey.
- Register new patients and maintain accurate, up\-to\-date patient records in line with confidentiality, GDPR and practice procedures.
- Take NHS and private payments, check exemptions, issue receipts and assist with end\-of\-day cashing up and banking procedures.
- Provide patients with clear information about appointments, basic treatment processes and practice policies, referring clinical or complex queries to the appropriate member of the dental team.
- Assist with the booking and appropriate signposting of urgent and emergency patients under the direction of clinicians.
- Keep the reception and waiting areas clean, tidy, welcoming and presentable.
- Work closely with dentists, dental nurses and management to support effective communication, patient flow and a positive experience for every patient.
Depending on your qualifications and experience, you may also be asked to provide occasional dental nursing support, including:
- Assisting dentists chairside during patient treatment.
- Preparing surgeries before sessions and turning rooms around efficiently between patients.
- Preparing instruments, equipment and materials for treatment.
- Maintaining high standards of infection prevention, decontamination, sterilisation and disinfection in accordance with practice procedures and professional requirements.
- Recording treatment details, charting and clinical notes as directed by the clinician.
- Supporting patients in a calm, friendly and reassuring manner before, during and after treatment.
- Assisting with stock control, equipment checks, maintenance records and clinical audits where required.
- Supporting clinical procedures such as impressions, photographs, digital scans and radiographs where appropriately trained and authorised.
We are looking for someone who is professional, approachable and dependable, with excellent communication skills and a genuine commitment to patient care.
You should be comfortable working in a fast\-paced environment, able to manage several priorities at once, and willing to work collaboratively across both reception and clinical areas.
Essential requirements
- Previous experience in a customer\-facing, reception or administrative role.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including a friendly and professional telephone manner.
- Strong organisational skills, attention to detail and the ability to remain calm under pressure.
- Confidence using computers, booking systems and email; training on the practice system will be provided.
- A professional approach to confidentiality, data protection and patient care.
- A willingness to support the wider team and work flexibly when required.
- Either previous dental nursing experience, an existing dental nursing qualification, or a genuine willingness to undertake dental nurse training.
- Previous experience as a dental receptionist, dental nurse or within a dental or medical practice.
- Experience of NHS dentistry, private dentistry, NHS exemptions and dental terminology.
- Experience handling payments, cashing up and basic reconciliation.
- Knowledge of infection prevention and control procedures.
- A permanent role with full\-time or part\-time/job\-share options considered.
- Supportive, friendly and professional team environment.
- Opportunity to develop a dual reception and dental nursing skill set.
- Support towards dental nurse training for the right candidate.
- Company pension.
- Employee discount.
- Referral programme.
- Free on\-site parking.
If you are an experienced dental receptionist looking to broaden your role, a former or current dental nurse seeking a more reception\-focused position, or someone keen to train as a dental nurse while developing a career in practice administration, we would be delighted to hear from you.
