The Data Protection Lawyer will join our client's legal team in London and support the organization's Global Data Protection Director (GDPD) in implementing data privacy strategies and ensuring compliance with legal and regulatory obligations across their international network. This mid-level role involves providing practical advice on all aspects of data privacy-including those related to artificial intelligence (AI)-supporting incident response, and assisting in the development of governance frameworks aligned with evolving regulations.
The Data Protection Lawyer will advise on data protection obligations, contribute to policy formulation, assist cross-functional teams on projects involving personal data, provide guidance on impact assessments, and ensure training is delivered to relevant stakeholders.
Key Responsibilities:
- Support the implementation of data privacy strategies and compliance initiatives across jurisdictions.
- Develop, review, and maintain data privacy policies, procedures, and guidance documents.
- Provide advice on day-to-day data privacy queries from internal teams, escalating complex matters when necessary.
- Coordinate data protection impact assessments and privacy-by-design initiatives for new projects or systems.
- Advise on data protection considerations related to technology use, procurement, and deployment.
- Assist with reporting requirements, notifications, and reputation management during data incidents.
- Prepare responses to Data Subject Access Requests and other rights-related queries.
- Liaise with external partners, clients, and regulators under supervision.
- Advise on international data transfers and individual rights across offices globally.
- Review client/vendor contracts to ensure appropriate data protection provisions are included.
- Provide guidance on AI-related data protection issues such as transparency, accountability, and fairness.
- Collaborate with technical teams to ensure compliance with regulatory frameworks.
- Design and deliver training programs focused on data privacy awareness and emerging technologies like AI.
- Stay updated on developments in privacy laws/regulations and share insights with stakeholders.
- Strong knowledge of international privacy laws (e.g., GDPR, UK GDPR, CCPA) and industry best practices.
- Understanding of AI-related data protection issues including ethical considerations and regulatory requirements.
- Experience advising on international data transfers, individual rights, risk assessments, and contractual terms with third parties.
- Familiarity with IT solutions/tools relevant to privacy compliance.
- Ability to provide clear advice to stakeholders at all levels while influencing senior decision-makers effectively.
- Strong organizational skills with attention to detail; capable of driving change initiatives independently.
- Demonstrable experience engaging with emerging laws/regulations in dynamic environments.
- Qualified lawyer (England & Wales or equivalent) with 4-5 years' post-qualification experience in a relevant field.
- Recognized certification or significant experience in providing data privacy advice within professional services or corporate settings.
