Control Systems Engineer (Siemens / Rockwell PLC)

I'm recruiting on behalf of Batch Control Systems, an independent systems integrator in Cumbernauld. They design, build, test and commission process control systems for pharmaceutical, chemical, food and drink, water and utilities customers. They're looking for an engineer who can take a PLC, DCS or SCADA project from functional spec to a running plant on Siemens or Rockwell, and ideally both. The role is based in their Cumbernauld office, with commissioning at customer sites.

About the company

Batch Control Systems has been based in Cumbernauld since 1996\. Thirty years in, most of their work still comes from customers who keep coming back, including Abbott, Johnson Matthey, CalaChem and Renewi.

It's a small engineering team, so you'd see whole projects rather than a slice of one, and deal with the customer yourself. Their work spans Rockwell (PlantPAx, ControlLogix, CompactLogix, GuardLogix, FactoryTalk), Siemens (PCS 7, TIA Portal), Emerson DeltaV, AVEVA and GE iFIX SCADA, and plant historians. Many of the systems they build they then look after on 24/7 support contracts, so what you commission, you'll live with.

What you'd be doing

• Designing and writing PLC and DCS software on Rockwell and Siemens, including batch and recipe\-driven processes (ISA\-88 style).


• Building SCADA and HMI applications (AVEVA, FactoryTalk View, WinCC, iFIX).


• Writing functional and software design specs and test documents. Some customers are regulated (GAMP, validated systems), so the paperwork has to be right.


• Running factory acceptance tests in Cumbernauld, then site acceptance tests and commissioning at the customer's plant.


• Fault\-finding, upgrading and migrating existing systems, and taking support calls on systems you know.


• Working directly with customer engineers from kick\-off to handover.

What they need

• You've personally written new PLC code, or substantially modified existing code, on Siemens or Rockwell (Allen\-Bradley) in a paid engineering role. Monitoring, fault\-finding or small tweaks on their own aren't enough for this role.


• You've commissioned at least one system on site and can talk through it: what it did, what went wrong, and what you changed.


• You can work from Cumbernauld every day and travel to customer sites. Sites can be rural, so in practice you'll need a full driving licence.


• You write clearly. A good part of this job is specs, test records and handover documents.


• The right to work in the UK. The company can't sponsor visas for this role.

Nice to have

• Rockwell PlantPAx or Siemens PCS 7 process libraries


• AVEVA (System Platform, InTouch, Historian) or Emerson DeltaV


• Batch control and recipe management (ISA\-88\)


• Pharma or chemical work, including GAMP 5 documentation


• Industrial networks (EtherNet/IP, PROFINET, PROFIBUS) and instrumentation


• HNC, HND or degree in electrical, control or a related engineering subject. Experience counts for more.

Pay and package

• £55,000 to £60,000 depending on experience. Senior engineer above this band? Apply and tell me what you're looking for. They'd rather talk than miss the right person.


• Pension with employer contributions above the legal minimum.


• Training on the platforms they use, and a clear route to senior and lead engineer as the team grows.


• Office\-based in Cumbernauld, 37\.5 hours Monday to Friday, with site work as projects need it.
