Construction Buyer

Engel Construction is looking for a motivated and organised Buyer to join our team.

This is an excellent opportunity for someone with some experience or knowledge of construction processes, materials and site operations, who is looking to develop their career within purchasing and procurement.

Working closely with our site teams, you will play an important role in ensuring that materials, plant and equipment are sourced efficiently, competitively and delivered when they are needed.

The Role

As a Buyer, your responsibilities will include:

• Sourcing construction materials and products at the best possible rates, while maintaining the required quality and standards.


• Obtaining and comparing supplier quotations and negotiating pricing where appropriate.


• Developing and maintaining strong, positive relationships with suppliers and subcontractors.


• Understanding project requirements and ensuring materials are ordered in good time to avoid delays on site.


• Monitoring hired plant, equipment and other hire items on site, keeping track of how long items have been on hire against the project budget and expected costs.


• Identifying opportunities to reduce unnecessary hire costs and ensuring equipment is off\-hired promptly when no longer required.


• Coordinating the company van and its logistics, including deliveries, collections and ensuring materials and equipment get to the right site at the right time.


• Working closely with site managers, project managers and the wider team to understand purchasing and logistical requirements.


• Keeping accurate records of orders, deliveries, hire periods and costs.


• Supporting the wider commercial team with cost control and procurement activities.

We are looking for someone who is:

• Interested in developing a career in construction purchasing/procurement.


• Ideally has some previous experience of working within construction or a good understanding of construction materials, processes and terminology.


• Commercially aware, with an eye for getting good value and controlling costs.


• Organised and able to manage multiple orders, suppliers and deadlines.


• A confident communicator who enjoys building good working relationships.


• Practical and proactive, with the ability to solve problems and think ahead.


• Comfortable dealing with suppliers and negotiating prices.


• IT literate and confident using email, spreadsheets and basic systems.


• Able to work as part of a busy team while also taking ownership of their responsibilities.


• Holds a full UK driving licence, as the office is in a rural location away from easy public transport.
