Purpose of the Roles:
=========================

The Clinical Placement Co\-ordinator (CPC) post is to plan, organise, support, evaluate \& record the undergraduate student nurses’ supernumerary and internship clinical placements, as part of the undergraduate BSc Nursing Children’s and General Programme (BNCG).

The CPC has the responsibility for promoting a positive clinical learning environment, guiding and supporting student nurses in assigned clinical areas to ensure that all clinical placements meet the requirements and standards with regard to planned experiences and outcomes for the undergraduate BSc in Nursing programmes.

The Student Allocation Liaison Officer (SALO) has the responsibility for planning, coordinating and management of student placements (Core and specialist) ensuring compliance with NMBI standards and requirements.

It is the responsibility of the SALO to liaise with the appropriate staff within Bon Secours, CHI, MMUH and The Hermitage, as appropriate and the third level institution, i.e. Dublin City University (DCU), in relation to the allocation of Student Nurses to clinical placements.

CPC

  • To encourage the application of nursing theory to nursing practice and participate in introducing changes in practice/projects that will improve patient care and staff/student learning.

  • Professional / clinical leadership which promotes patient advocacy continuous improvements in care, teamwork and innovation.

  • Supervision and coaching of student nurses whilst maintaining a safe working environment.

  • Organisation of student nurse education and participation in teaching, guidance and training of qualified staff.

  • Education resource (clinical and theoretical) for members of the multidisciplinary team.

  • Facilitation of communication across Nursing Practice Development, the organisation and outside agencies.
Objectives of the CPC Post
==============================
  • As per NMBI requirements CPC co\-ordinates student nurses’ clinical learning placements throughout the duration of the BNCG programme (NMBI ratio 1:30\).

  • Professional / clinical leadership and management that promotes efficiency, innovation, teamwork and continuous quality improvements.

  • Acts as a link between the student nurse, preceptor/associate preceptor, clinical nurse manager, Module Co\-Ordinators DCU, members of BNCG team.

  • Guides registered nurses in their role as the student’s preceptor during their clinical placements.

  • Guides preceptors in the process of clinical competency assessment, ensuring assessments are carried out with due regard for fairness, accuracy, objectivity \& timely.

  • To facilitate BSc nursing students and clinical staff in the correct use of the assessment documents e.g. (Clinical Learning Outcomes and Competency Assessment Document).

  • Promote the students’ application of theoretical knowledge to clinical nursing practice and facilitates the application of evidence\-based nursing practice.

  • Participate in service improvement and auditing nursing practice and implementing changes in patient care in collaboration with multidisciplinary colleagues.

  • Contribute to the development, implementation and evaluation of policies, guidelines and procedures as required.

  • Participate in nurse practice initiatives to support the application of theory to clinical practice and improved quality of patient care.

  • The post holder is expected to work with other professionals involved in all aspects of Nursing, including multidisciplinary professional education.
Objectives of the SALO post
  • Establishing student placements as part of the BNCG programme.

  • As per NMBI requirements, the SALO co\-ordinates student nurses’ clinical learning placements allocations throughout the duration of the BNCG programme (NMBI ratio 1:50\).

  • Liaise closely with the Allocations Office in DCU, SALO in CHI, MMUH and Hermitage hospitals as required.

  • Coordinate pre placement requirements with DCU Allocations office for first year placements.

  • Liaise with DON/NPD Co\-Ordinator/DCU/HR Allocations for pre placement requirements for internship.

  • Liaise with HR in ensuring students prior to internship are prepared in terms of Garda Vetting, Occupational Health and any other requirements.

  • Liaise with DCU Allocations and other relevant SALOs for placements for supernumery students.

  • The SALO facilitates communication across Nursing Practice Development, the organisation and outside agencies.

  • Liaising with DON/NPD Co\-Ordinator/ADON/CNMs on matters relating to staffing levels during rostered placements.

  • Creating and promoting healthy working relationships between clinical staff, nursing administration and DCU.

  • Being available for individual students for the purpose of advice and support.

  • Adhering to relevant DCU policies in relation to placement absenteeism e.g. Discretionary leave and Compassionate leave policies.

  • Confirm student’s timesheets and all NCADs in line with GDPR on InPlace.
Professional Standard

CPC

  • To practice within and support the Bon Secours Mission and Values, policies, procedures, guidelines and new initiative as directed / introduced by the hospital.

  • Guide and direct student nurses in order to provide a high standard of holistic nursing care to all patients having regard to the ethics and philosophy of the hospital.

  • Facilitate student learning and experience regarding effective communication with patients, relatives, visitors and multi\-disciplinary team as necessary, and ensure patient confidentiality is respected and maintained at all times.

  • Promote nursing care that is based on the latest research findings and constitutes best practice and act as a clinical resource across disciplines.

  • Assist with orientation programmes for student nurses in clinical areas and support them in adapting to the clinical environment.

  • Assist Clinical Nurse Managers and Staff Nurses in ensuring that student nurses are assigned to patient care preceptors in an appropriate and effective manner which will enhance learning

  • Provide guidance to clinical staff on any issues relating to student nurses that arise in the clinical placement, ensuring that student nurses’ learning objectives and required competences are met.

  • Educate staff in the clinical area in relation to future developments in student programmes.

  • Support Clinical Nurse managers and Staff Nurses in their teaching role.

  • To liaise with both BSc nursing students and preceptors with regard to the student’s performance and progress.

  • Identify individual educational and developments needs with the Nursing Practice Development Co\-ordinator in order to maintain clinical competency.

  • Promote evidence –based nursing practice.

  • Holds an appropriate and effective set of professional values and beliefs and behaves in line with these.

  • Promotes and consistently supports other members of the team in their ethical and value\-based practices by:

+ Ensuring that professional ethics and values are disseminated through all levels of the nursing service
+ Articulating an ethical and values\-driven stance at corporate level
+ Contributing to the formation of organisational ethics and values
+ Dealing with complex ethical client and service dilemmas
+ Acting as a role model for other staff in the handling of complex or sensitive issues.

SALO

  • To practice within and support the Bon Secours Mission and Values, policies, procedures, guidelines and new initiative as directed / introduced by the hospital.

  • Assist with orientation programmes for student nurses in clinical areas and support them in adapting to the clinical environment.

  • The SALO must adhere to Code of Professional Conduct and Ethics for Registered Nurses and Registered Midwives, Incorporating the Scope of Practice and Professional Guidance (NMBI, 2025\).

  • Is aware and understands the need to adhere to DCU and hospital policies relevant to their practice.

  • To liaise with CNM/designate to ensure that BSc nursing students work with their allocated preceptor/associated preceptor daily. Assist in overseeing the nursing practice of student nurses during their clinical placements.

  • Observe performance in the clinical setting and discuss strengths and weaknesses with the Student Nurse, Clinical Nurse Manager and Staff Nurses/preceptors prior to completion of assessment records at the end of each clinical placement.

  • Liaise with the Module Coordinators from DCU assigned to the student years and discuss individual performance and special learning needs as appropriate.

  • Support clinical staff, staff nurses /preceptors in developing their clinical preceptor role.

  • Provide information in student folders on completing the NCAD.

  • Ensure all relevant staff are trained as preceptors and ensure there is an up\-to\-date list of preceptors available in each clinical area. Lead out on preceptorship updates.

  • Maintain links with the students’ university personnel and assist in developing students support learning plans, as required.

  • Attend \& participate at the various nursing forums, in our partner university DCU. (e.g. CLEG, SALO, BNCG Team, ESNAP, STM, BNCG Placement Working Group for New NMBI Standards).

  • Ensure that students adhere to the relevant Hospital policies and procedures, i.e. absenteeism, nursing (uniform), relevant human resource policies and other hospital polices including social media.
