Location: Thornton Manor Care Home, CH2 4JQ
Reports to : Floor supervisor, Nurse , Clinical Lead, Deputy and Home Manager
Hours: 8am to 8pm, Rota Monday to Sunday
Main Purpose of role: To assist with general day to day care of those who use the service, maintain safety, and provide direct care.
Role and Responsibilities
- To be responsible primarily for and assist with service users care needs and provide direct care where needed.
- To be part of a cohesive and enthusiastic multi\-disciplinary team.
- To contribute to improvement in health, safety and security by sharing learning from incidents.
- To work within the legal, ethical and the company’s policy framework, adopting an anti\-discriminatory approach that promotes equality and values diversity.
- To contribute to the development of anti\-discriminatory practice and values within the occupational therapy service.
- To assist service users who need help with dressing, undressing, bathing and access to the toilet, use of continence aids or alternatively catheter / stoma care.
- To help service users with mobility problems and other physical health needs, help in the use of and care of aids and equipment. This may require moving and handling using mechanical equipment.
- To care for service users who are physically and / or mentally unwell.
- To help care for service users who are dying and at the later stages of their life in life in line with homes policies and procedures.
- To help in the promotion of mental and physical activity of service users through talking to them, taking them out, sharing with them in activities such as reading, writing, hobbies and recreations.
- To read and write reports as required, and to take part in staff and service users meetings and in training activities as directed.
- To help with the preparation and distribution of meals and drinks. Record accurately where required nutritional and fluid input / output. Have a basic understanding of artificial fluids and reporting role in this area.
- To be familiar with and comply with the procedures, rules and regulations as laid down in the Employee Handbook and the Health and Safety policies and procedures.
- To be familiar with the Fire policy and procedure, highlighting hazards and acting in a way that maintains Fire Safety within the home, reporting issues to a line manager as required.
- To be familiar with the Fire Evacuation plan and be able to evacuate the home as required in line with the Fire Policy.
- To be vigilant with regards to the security of the home, particularly during the hours of dark when all windows and doors must be shut and where appropriate locked.
- To be vigilant with regards to the security of records, documentation and property of the home or service users in line with the homes GDPR policies.
- To read any communications and Care Plans / care entries when starting your duties, back to when you previously last finished your duties.
- To maintain a health and safety environment in the home, entering in the relevant book and notifying the Manager as appropriate, accidents, breakages, or equipment in the need of attention of any description within the home.
- To work closely with the Health and Wellbeing team to facilitate activities.
- To record in the relevant book and advise the Manager immediately of any changes in health or behaviour of a service user.
- To ensure that all duties undertaken by other care staff are performed to the required standards, and that all staff contribute to the efficient running of the home and creation of the right atmosphere. If standards are not met, reporting this to your line manager.
- To be responsible for the use and care of equipment and supplies.
- To ensure that all rooms, walkways and common spaces are properly cleaned, maintained and adequately heated – reporting any issues noted to a line manager in a timely manner.
- To be familiar with and comply with the regulations and procedures required in the execution of the above duties (i.e. food hygiene, fire precautions and health and safety).
- To take on a specific role and responsibility as part of your development plan.
- To undertake other duties as necessary.
