The role:

An exciting opportunity has arisen within NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde for a motivated individual with appropriate leadership and management experience and skills. The North Sector Medical Services Business Manager position is a varied and rewarding role, supporting the senior management team in service delivery within Glasgow Royal Infirmary and Stobhill Ambulatory Care Hospital. This engaging post encompasses a broad remit, requiring the successful candidate to work flexibly across both acute and ambulatory care settings. You will be directly involved in operational planning, budgetary oversight, and resource allocation, ensuring that patient care remains at the forefront of organisational priorities.

In collaboration with the Clinical Service Manager and General Manager, you will be responsible for implementing and maintaining processes and services that support local, organisational, and national quality, service, and governance objectives, including performance review. This involves monitoring key performance indicators, contributing to quality improvement initiatives, and helping to drive service development in line with NHS standards. You will be expected to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and actively participate in audits and reviews, fostering a culture of continuous improvement.

The Business Manager will work closely with the senior team in the delivery of acute inpatient and outpatient services, ensuring alignment with access standards and best practice. This will include working to streamline patient pathways, reduce waiting times, and ensure efficient use of resources. You will also oversee the evaluation of resources and systems within Medical Specialties to promote both quality and efficiency. This may involve reviewing staffing levels, managing contracts, liaising with external partners, and supporting the introduction of new technologies or care models.

The postholder is expected to adopt an innovative and dynamic approach to this role while providing operational support to the senior management team. This means proactively identifying opportunities for service enhancement, championing change, and supporting colleagues through periods of transformation. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills will be essential, as you will be required to engage regularly with clinical staff, patients, and external stakeholders. The role offers a unique opportunity to make a substantial impact on healthcare delivery within two of Glasgow’s key hospitals, contributing positively to patient outcomes and organisational success.

This role is offered as a secondment opportunity, and candidates must secure approval for secondment from their substantive post within NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde at the time of application.

Duration, Location, and Working Pattern:

  • Location based in Glasgow Royal Infirmary

  • Fixed\-term/secondment contract for 12 months

  • Full\-time position (36 hours per week)

  • Shift pattern for this post are Monday Friday 0900\-17:30 x1 day and 0900\-16:30 x 4 days
Key responsibilities:
  • Develop, undertake and evaluate surveys or audits to gather, extract, collate and analyse data, often complex, to identify any problem areas / data quality issues / gaps as required e.g. Compliance of 18 week referral to treatment and Treatment Time Guarantee (inpatient and day cases.

  • Assist in the delivery and achievement of operational targets and HEAT Standards including: 4 hour Accident and Emergency Waiting times, 12 weeks referral to a first outpatient appointment, 18 week referral to treatment, 4% Sickness Absence, Cancer Waiting times.

  • Assist with the development and implementation of local organisational policies within the team.

  • Assist with the recruitment and selection of staff, organisation of induction programme and provision of training as required.

  • Assist in the complaints management process by developing monitoring systems to ensure that complaints are investigated thoroughly within target timescales. Liaise with colleagues regarding the develop action plans in response to issues raised where a need for improvement is identified.

  • The post holder will assist in the delivery of the Clinical Governance Agenda, being responsible for monitoring the Significant Clinical Incident process ensuring an end point is reached and learning points shared.

  • Work with Clinical Services Manager to manage and lead on junior doctor workforce to include recruitment and compliance Human Resource polices

  • Oversee the Rota Administration team to manage junior doctor workforce, rotas and ensure rota compliance,

  • Participate in annual Performance Development Plan / eKSF/ iMatters and regular meetings with General Manager and Clinical Services Managers.

Knowledge, training, qualifications and/or experience required to do the job:
  • The post holder will be a graduate and hold professional qualification or evidence of equivalent higher level study and/or relevant experience.

  • The post holder should have experience working within NHS or similar complex organisation and have a wide knowledge of the workings of the National Health Service.

  • Experience in a management role or equivalent position with an extensive knowledge of policy and strategy is required. The post holder should show a commitment to continuous professional development.

  • The post holder requires to have excellent organisational, communicating and interpersonal skills and the ability to work to tight deadlines with conflicting priorities. The post holder must be able to work under pressure and using own initiative, and to multi\-task and manage complex tasks simultaneously.

  • The post holder should have the ability to use highly developed analytical, influencing and negotiating skills across a wide range of staff as well as being able to demonstrate an ability to use initiative in solving difficult problems.

  • The post holder requires to be skilled in the presentation of reports and the use of information technology, in particular have a good working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint.

  • The post holder should communicate effectively at all levels and be able to apply leadership skills in a range of situations
