We are seeking a Building Surveyor to join our team within the Place Directorate at Salford City Council. As a Building Surveyor, you will be integral to the delivery of a wide range of building, construction, and demolition projects across diverse property portfolios, including commercial, residential, leisure, education, and industrial properties. This role involves significant client interaction and work on historical and heritage properties, as well as educational institutions, making experience in the education sector highly desirable.

Day-to-Day Responsibilities:

• Engage in early-stage design and feasibility work alongside clients to develop detailed briefs.


• Carry out detailed design work, prepare production information, and undertake the role of Project Manager.


• Administer building contracts and act as ‘Lead Discipline’ on programmed capital projects.


• Perform comprehensive professional surveying work including surveys, Party Wall (PW) work, dilapidations, Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) & Fire Risk Assessments (FRA’s).


• Conduct inspections to resolve building defects, assign contractors, and manage the works.


• Ensure health and safety standards are met, adhering to legislation such as CDM Regulations.


• Manage capital investment delivery, ensuring projects are completed on time and within budget.


• Provide professional advice and guidance to internal and external clients to ensure high standards in all project stages.


• Work closely with boards of governors and headteachers in educational settings, ensuring projects meet the specific needs of educational institutions.

Required Skills & Qualifications:

• BSc in Building Surveying or equivalent, with a preference for candidates with higher-level education.


• Minimum 3 years post-qualification experience in a Building Surveying environment, ideally with significant exposure to the education sector.


• Demonstrable experience in delivering projects from inception to completion, with project values up to £5M.


• Proficiency in AutoCAD with the ability to produce detailed specifications.


• Experience in managing project budgets and client-facing roles.


• Experience in procurement related to building works through competitive tendering.


• Experience with heritage properties and involvement in commercial projects.


• Experience of delivering capital investment projects within the education sector.
