The Rugby Club Bar and General Manager is responsible for the overall day\-to\-day management of the club's bar, food and kitchen operations, facilities, events, and commercial activities. The role ensures a welcoming environment for members, guests, sponsors, visiting teams, and the local community while driving revenue growth, ensuring cost control and maintaining high standards of customer service, compliance, and operational efficiency.
Key Responsibilities
Bar Management
- Oversee all bar operations, ensuring excellent customer service standards.
- Manage stock ordering, inventory control, and supplier relationships.
- Monitor bar profitability, sales performance, and gross profit margins.
- Ensure responsible alcohol service and compliance with licensing regulations.
- Develop promotions and initiatives to increase bar sales and member engagement.
- Maintain cleanliness, presentation, and safety standards throughout bar areas.
- Oversee the day\-to\-day operation of the club kitchen and food service activities.
- Ensure the provision of high\-quality, safe, and cost\-effective food offerings for members, guests, match days, functions, and events.
- Manage food purchasing, supplier relationships, stock control, and inventory levels.
- Ensure compliance with all food hygiene, food safety, allergen, and environmental health regulations.
- Maintain appropriate food safety documentation, records, and procedures in line with current legislation.
- Develop menus and catering packages for match days, hospitality events, private functions, and community activities.
- Identify opportunities to increase food sales and catering revenue through promotions, events, and enhanced customer offerings.
- Ensure the kitchen and food preparation areas are maintained to the highest standards of cleanliness, hygiene, and operational efficiency.
- Manage the daily operation of club facilities and premises.
- Coordinate opening and closing procedures.
- Ensure maintenance issues are identified and resolved promptly.
- Oversee security arrangements and safeguarding of club assets.
- Ensure compliance with health and safety, fire, food hygiene, and licensing requirements.
- Recruit, train, schedule, and supervise bar and casual staff.
- Conduct performance reviews and provide ongoing support and development.
- Manage staff rotas to ensure adequate coverage for matches, events, and functions.
- Foster a positive, professional, and team\-oriented working environment.
- Manage cash handling procedures and daily reconciliations.
- Prepare regular financial and operational reports for the board of directors.
- Monitor budgets and control operational costs.
- Assist with forecasting and revenue planning.
- Maximise profitability through effective stock and labour management.
- Coordinate match\-day hospitality and clubhouse operations.
- Promote and manage private functions, parties, sponsor events, and community activities.
- Work closely with rugby section leaders and volunteers to support club events.
- Ensure successful delivery of all club functions and revenue\-generating activities.
- Support membership recruitment and retention initiatives.
- Build positive relationships with members, sponsors, local businesses, and visitors.
- Represent the club professionally within the local community.
- Help develop commercial opportunities and sponsorship partnerships.
- Ensure compliance with all relevant legislation and club policies.
- Maintain records required for licensing, health and safety, and employment regulations.
- Support the board of directors in implementing strategic plans and club objectives.
Essential Skills and Experience
- Previous experience managing a licensed bar, clubhouse, hospitality venue, or sports club.
- Experience managing food service, catering, hospitality, or kitchen operations.
- Strong leadership and staff management skills.
- Excellent customer service and communication abilities.
- Experience in stock control, cash handling, and budgeting.
- Knowledge of licensing laws, health and safety requirements, and food hygiene regulations.
- Ability to work evenings, weekends, and match days.
- Strong organisational and problem\-solving skills.
- Experience working within a rugby club or sports club environment.
- Personal Licence Holder qualification.
- Event management experience.
- Marketing and social media promotion experience.
- First Aid qualification.
- Bar revenue and profitability targets achieved.
- Membership and customer satisfaction levels maintained or improved.
- Effective management of staff including control of hours.
- Compliance with licensing and health and safety standards.
- Effective stock control with minimal wastage.
- Growth in function bookings and commercial income.
