Your role at Protea
You own the avionics of our fire\-suppression drones. Everything that isn't powertrain is yours: architecture, flight controller integration, datalinks, GNSS/INS, the CAN backbone, secondary power supplies, sensor interfaces, harness design. Today that means integrating COTS hardware into a system that flies; tomorrow it means our own PCBs. You define it, you build it, you debug it on the bench and on the drone, and you hand over something the team can trust in smoke. Full\-stack hardware, no silos, no three sign\-offs to pick up a wrench.
What you'll do
- Own the avionics architecture end to end: flight controller (Pixhawk/PX4 stack), companion compute, sensors, datalinks (radio/satellite based), GNSS/INS, CAN bus, cameras and gimbal integration
- Own the avionics roadmap: you decide which functions move from COTS onto our own PCBs, in what order, and why
- Design and build the avionics box, all interfaces, protection and EMI from COTS integration now to custom PCBs next
- Design, build and document harnesses and connector systems that survive vibration, heat and field handling
- Integrate, configure and debug the system on the bench and on the aircraft, together with flight control, power electronics and propulsion
- Bring your hardware from prototype to something manufacturable: BOM, DFM, supplier communication for your parts
- Support flight test campaigns with your hardware in the field, and take the results back to the lab
- Degree in electrical / electronics engineering or mechatronics
- Superb first\-principle thinking, proven hands\-on: you've integrated and debugged avionics or embedded hardware systems on real vehicles, e.g., drones, robots, EVs, whatever flies, drives or rolls
- Proven track record for hands\-on PCB design and bring\-up either in professional or private passion projects
- Solid understanding of embedded interfaces (CAN, UART, SPI, I2C), low\-voltage power design, EMI and signal integrity
- Hands\-on experience with PX4/ArduPilot or comparable flight stacks, GNSS/INS integration and RF datalinks
- Schematic and layout experience (Altium, KiCad or similar) and the ability to read, write and follow a harness drawing
- You've chased a ground loop at 2 a.m. and found it
- Deep drive to flourish in a leader\-leader culture with incredible grit to build a company with us
- Good English; German not required
