Org. Setting and Reporting
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. The overall objective of UNEP's Industry and Economy Division is to encourage decision\-makers in government, local authorities and industry to develop and adopt policies, strategies and practices and technologies that promote sustainable patterns of consumption and production, make efficient use of natural resources, ensure safe management of chemicals and contribute to making trade and environment policies mutually supportive. The Life Cycle Initiative is a public\-private, multi\- stakeholder partnership enabling the global use of credible life\-cycle knowledge by private and public decision makers. Hosted by UNEP, the Life Cycle Initiative is at the interface between users and experts of life\-cycle approaches. It provides a global forum to ensure a science\-based, consensus\-building process to support decisions and policies towards the shared vision of sustainability as a public good. It delivers authoritative opinion on sound tools and approaches by engaging its multi\-stakeholder partnership (including governments, businesses, scientific and civil society organizations). The Initiative facilitates the application of life\-cycle knowledge in the global sustainable development agenda in order to achieve global goals faster and more efficiently. The position is located in the Industry and Economy Division, Industry Innovation Branch, Materials and Systems Innovation Unit in the Paris duty station. Under the guidance of the Head of the Materials and Systems Innovation unit and under the direct supervision of the senior Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) advisor, the incumbent will be responsible for the following duties:
Responsibilities

  • Manages and engages in technical and scientific discussions with leading global experts in the field of LCA development and LCA application in policy and industry; presents the work of UNEP and the Initiative in the field of LCA in global and regional scientific conferences. • Ensures smooth functioning, responds to queries and resolves IT development and operations (directly or in consultation with UNEP IT functions) related to the hosting of LCA data and Life Cycle Impact Assessment (LCIA) characterization factors enabled in UNEP. • Carries out basic research on selected aspects of LCA projects, operations and other activities, etc., to include collecting, analyzing and presenting life\-cycle data / information gathered from diverse sources. • Contributes to the development, implementation and evaluation of assigned programmes and projects to enhance the use of life\-cycle approaches, including LCA; monitors and analyzes specific aspects of progamme/project development and implementation; reviews relevant documents and reports with substantive knowledge of life\-cycle approaches; identifies problems and issues to be addressed and recommend corrective actions; liaises with relevant parties; identifies and tracks follow\-up actions. • Contributes to the preparation of various written outputs, e.g. draft background papers, analytical notes, sections of reports and studies, inputs to publications related to the use of life cycle approaches. • Contributes to the organization of consultative and other meetings, conferences. to include proposing agenda topics, identifying and proposed participants, preparation of background documents and presentations, handling logistics. • Undertakes outreach activities; participates in the development of training workshops, seminars; participates in and makes presentations on assigned topics/activities. • Helps coordinate activities related to budget funding (programme/project preparation and submissions, progress reports, financial statements) and preparation of related documents/reports (pledging, work programme, programme budget). • Contributes to the collection and analysis of data as well as identification of trends or patterns and provides draft insights through graphs, charts, tables and reports using data visualization methods for data\-driven planning, decision\-making, presentation and reporting. • Performs other duties as required.

Competencies
  • PROFESSIONALISM: Knowledge and understanding of theories, concepts and approaches relevant to sustainability and life\-cycle approaches, including thorough knowledge of Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) data management and formats and schemas (JSON; ILCD; ecospold) and Life Cycle Impact Assessment indicators development. Ability to work with LCA application at various levels, especially in product design / identification of hotspots in high\-impact sectors (e.g. buildings and construction; mobility; textiles; chemicals; packaging; extractives). Knowledge of life\-cycle approaches applied at economy\-wide assessments (e.g. Material Flow Accounts; Environmentally Extended Input Output analyses) is an advantage. Ability to identify issues, analyze and participate in the resolution of issues/problems. Conceptual analytical and evaluative skills to conduct independent research and analysis, including familiarity with and experience in the use of various research sources, including electronic sources on the internet, intranet and other databases. Ability to apply judgment in the context of assignments given, plan own work and manage conflicting priorities. The ability to analyze and interpret data in support of decision\-making and convey resulting information to management. Education
An advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in Environmental Sciences, Engineering, Sustainability assessment of production and consumption systems or Industrial Ecology or related field is required. A first\-level university degree in the relevant field in combination with two (2\) additional years of qualifying experience maybe be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree. Successful completion of both degree and non\-degree programs in data analytics, business analytics or data science programs is desirable.
Job \- Specific Qualification
Professional training in Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), with work experience in high\-impact sectors (e.g. buildings and construction; mobility; textiles; chemicals; packaging; extractives; food) is required.
Work Experience
A minimum of two years of progressively responsible experience in project management on applying life\-cycle approaches to Sustainable Consumption and Production (SCP), circular economy or related area is required. Work experience in applying Life Cycle Assessment ( LCA) data management and formats and schemas (JavaScript Object Notation (JSON), International Reference Life Cycle Data System (ILCD); ecospold) is required Work experience in using at least one of the major software packages (SimaPro; GaBi; OpenLCA; Brightway) is required. Work experience in conveying results from life\-cycle approaches to policymakers and / or in the context of international organisations is desirable 1 year or more of experience in data analytics or related area is desirable (none if successful YPP or P1 with a related degree)
