About the Venue

The Canalside is a busy café, bar and events venue operated as part of Boroughmuir Rugby \& Community Sports Club. While rooted in the traditions of the rugby club, the venue serves as a vibrant and welcoming community hub with over 700 members, attracting a wide range of customers, families, local groups, and event attendees throughout the week.

The venue offers a dynamic and fast\-paced hospitality environment, combining café service, bar operations, live sport, functions, and community events under one roof. No two days are the same, and the successful candidate will thrive in a hands\-on role that requires adaptability, strong teamwork, and the ability to maintain high standards during both busy service periods and large\-scale events.

This role is ideally suited to someone who enjoys working in a varied environment and is confident leading teams, supporting operations, and helping deliver a consistently high\-quality experience across all areas of the venue.

Job Purpose

The Assistant Bar Manager supports the Bar Manager in the day\-to\-day running of the venue, helping to deliver a consistently high standard of customer service, operational performance, and team leadership. This hands\-on role combines front\-of\-house leadership with operational and administrative responsibilities, ensuring smooth service, strong team performance, and a welcoming environment for both customers and staff.

Key Responsibilities

Operations \& Venue Management \- 40%

  • Support the daily running of all bar and front\-of\-house operations.

  • Lead shifts in the absence of the Bar Manager, ensuring efficient and professional service throughout the venue.

  • Maintain a visible presence on the floor during service periods to support staff and enhance customer experience.

  • Maintain high standards of cleanliness, organisation, stock control, and safety across all bar, cellar, storage, and customer\-facing areas.

  • Manage stock ordering, deliveries, rotation, and wastage control to ensure accurate stock levels and efficient operations.

  • Ensure all equipment is maintained and report any maintenance issues promptly.

  • Carry out opening and closing procedures, including cash handling, till reconciliation, banking procedures, and team briefings.

  • Use EPOS and inventory systems accurately to support reporting and stock management.
Administration \& Compliance \- 20%
  • Complete daily and weekly administrative tasks accurately and within required deadlines.

  • Maintain supplier invoices, delivery records, compliance logs, cleaning schedules, and operational documentation.

  • Ensure compliance with licensing laws, food safety regulations, company procedures, and health \& safety standards.

  • Support rota planning, shift coordination, and labour management to meet operational needs.
Team Leadership \& Development \- 20%
  • Supervise and support supervisors and team members during shifts.

  • Assist with recruitment, onboarding, and training of new staff.

  • Provide coaching and ongoing support to maintain high service standards and encourage team development.

  • Support performance management and contribute to a positive and professional workplace culture.

  • Promote effective communication, teamwork, and accountability across all departments.
Customer Service \- 10%
  • Deliver excellent customer service and lead by example at all times.

  • Handle customer feedback and complaints professionally and efficiently.

  • Encourage customer engagement, upselling, and repeat business.

  • Ensure all guests receive a friendly, welcoming, and positive experience.
Venue Standards \& Quality Control \- 10%
  • Ensure venue presentation, cleanliness, and operational standards are consistently maintained.

  • Monitor completion of cleaning schedules and operational checklists.

  • Support responsible alcohol service and Challenge 25 procedures.

  • Assist in maintaining high standards during functions, live events, and busy service periods.
Skills \& Qualifications
  • Previous experience in a supervisory or senior bar role within hospitality or a licensed venue.

  • Strong leadership, communication, and organisational skills.

  • Experience with stock control and inventory management.

  • Excellent customer service and problem\-solving abilities.

  • Good understanding of licensing laws, food safety, and health \& safety procedures.

  • Confident working in a fast\-paced environment and under pressure.

  • Experience using EPOS and stock management systems preferred.

  • Strong attention to detail and ability to manage administrative responsibilities effectively.

  • Passion for hospitality, teamwork, and delivering high operational standards.

  • A proactive team member that supports the Bar Manager and the Events Coordinator
Working Hours
  • Full\-time salaried position.

  • Flexible schedule required, including evenings, weekends, and public holidays.

  • The role will typically include:

  • 2 office/administration days

  • 3 on\-floor operational shifts

  • Additional hours may be required during busy periods, functions, or special events.
Pay: £27,000\.00 per year
