Purpose of the Role

As an apprentice in our engineering consultancy, your role has a clear and important purpose. You will learn, contribute, and grow into a confident, capable engineering professional. Your apprenticeship combines real project experience with structured learning, giving you the skills, knowledge, and behaviours needed for a successful career in engineering.

Key Responsibilities

1\. Support Technical Design and Engineering Tasks

  • Assist with creating drawings, models, and design documents

  • Carry out basic engineering calculations under supervision

  • Help prepare technical reports, schedules, and specifications

  • Learn to use industry software such as CAD, BIM, and analysis tools
2\. Contribute to Project Delivery
  • Work as part of project teams to deliver engineering solutions

  • Support senior engineers with research, data gathering, and analysis

  • Participate in project meetings, reviews, and briefings

  • Help maintain accurate project documentation and records
3\. Participate in Site Visits and Inspections
  • Assist in collecting site data, measurements, and photographs

  • Observe inspections and understand how designs are applied on site

  • Learn about health, safety, and environmental requirements

  • Provide notes or summaries from visits for the project team
4\. Develop Professional and Technical Skills
  • Complete all apprenticeship training requirements on time

  • Apply classroom learning to real project work

  • Seek guidance and feedback from mentors and colleagues

  • Work towards professional competence and industry accreditation
5\. Support Quality and Compliance
  • Follow company standards, processes, and quality procedures

  • Ensure accuracy in all work produced

  • Ask questions when unsure and escalate issues appropriately

  • Learn how engineering decisions impact safety, quality, and costs
6\. Communicate Effectively with Colleagues
  • Collaborate with engineers, designers, and project managers

  • Communicate progress on assigned tasks

  • Prepare clear notes, documents, or updates when asked

  • Build positive working relationships across the team
7\. Show Initiative and a Willingness to Learn
  • Take responsibility for personal learning and development

  • Be proactive in asking for opportunities to gain experience

  • Stay curious about engineering problems and solutions

Skills, Knowledge and Experience

1\. Essential Skills

  • Strong communication skills

2\. Knowledge Required
  • Foundational STEM knowledge from school or college

  • Awareness of engineering principles (at a basic level)

  • Interest in how engineering projects are designed and delivered
3\. Experience and Qualifications Required

Minimum Academic Requirements

Most engineering apprenticeship roles accept:

  • GCSEs (or equivalent) including Maths, English, and Science

  • BTEC qualifications in relevant subjects, such as:
+ BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Engineering
+ BTEC Level 3 National Extended Certificate in Engineering
+ BTEC Level 3 National Diploma in Engineering
+ BTEC Level 3 National Extended Diploma in Engineering
+ BTEC Level 3 in Applied Science, Construction, or Technology subjects

These BTEC qualifications demonstrate practical, technical understanding and are highly valued for engineering apprenticeships.

Desirable Experience (Not essential)

  • School or college engineering projects

  • Technology, robotics, or STEM clubs

  • Work experience in engineering, construction, manufacturing, or technical environments

  • Practical hobbies such as mechanics, electronics, coding, or DIY
