Application Engineer (CAD/CAM)
Elevation are working on a fantastic opportunity for a reputable business based in Sheffield who are looking to further expand their engineering teams with a CAD/CAM Programmer. As a CAD/CAM engineer you will play a key role in taking products from concept to production, making sure they’re built in the most cost-effective and efficient way possible.
This role involves working closely with Operations, Quality, Planning, and customers to ensure everything runs smoothly; from early design input to solving problems on the shop floor. You’ll manage multiple engineering projects, improve processes, reduce costs, and help us deliver world-class parts, particularly for the aerospace and orthopaedics industries.
What You’ll Be Doing As a CAD/CAM Programmer:
- Lead and manage multiple engineering projects, tracking progress and flagging risks early
- Own the manufacturing process for your assigned programs to ensure smooth production
- Represent Engineering in daily operations meetings and help drive resolution of actions
- Provide cost estimates and technical input for customer quotations
- Monitor project costs and work to stay within targets
- Use your experience to improve machining processes and reduce cycle times
- Solve production issues using tools like 8D or DMAIC
- Program CNC machines (multi-axis, mill-turn, turning) using CAM software (Hypermill, MasterCam)
- Design fixtures and tooling using CAD (preferably Siemens NX)
- Create in-process documentation and prints
- Work closely with Planning, Quality, Production and customers
Essential Skills & Experience:
- Strong background in CNC programming and machining
- Experience with CAM systems such as Hypermill, Mastercam, or Vericut
- CAD experience, ideally Siemens NX
- Solid understanding of Lean principles and process optimisation
- Confident with GD&T and reading technical drawings
- Familiarity with ERP systems (creating BOMs, routings, item masters)
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills
- Experience in a fast-paced, hands-on manufacturing environment
- Aerospace and/or orthopaedics manufacturing experience
- Knowledge of process capability and measurement systems
- Skilled in cost estimating and project tracking
- Time-served apprenticeship in engineering or a degree in Mechanical/Manufacturing Engineering
- 5+ years of experience in a similar role
